Vinyl Me Please Anthology

There's just too many to guess at this point.......but lets do so anyway!

I was actually thinking that an Art Blakey one would be so so so cool. There has been so many iterations of the Jazz Messengers that it could essentially be an overview of the 'greatest' line-ups from the 50's through to 1990 when he passed.

It'll be Kenny G with a gift certificate for a free starbucks frappucino. There's also a blu ray documentary about the history of the frappucino.

Well I've been working hard to keep my VMP orders down. Doing pretty well until now if I say so myself. :) However, I've been going back to Herbie off-and-on since it was announced. So with this thread and the SHF comments mostly being favorable this is my 2nd VMP Anthology after original Blue Note.

I upped to the 3mth for the discount, made a quick email to VMP CS to get it updated asap ( less than CS 24hr turnaround and they applied a store credit to my acct b4 I ordered), and a couple unboxing videos I went for it. It is Herbie Hancock. I have good quality audiophile versions of 1st 3 in the box so it should be fun to compare. The rest will add to my HH discography.

I caved in and ordered today too. All this talk about how good it sounds and, funny enough, listening to the podcast pushed me over the edge. And I emailed VMP this morning about the discount code and they came through within an hour with $60 in store credit. Made it sting a little less. (Fingers crossed on getting 11 flat LPs from GZ.)

Anyways, I love Herbie. Saw him on the 1+1 tour with Wayne in 1997 and saw him in 2008 in a sextet with Dave Holland on bass and Lionel Loueke on guitar. An early Happy Father's Day present to myself.

You people are not helping me resist this. Anyone want to give me a nice bit of $$ for my original Head Hunters and 80s Japanese press of Maiden Voyage?

My guess is they're going to go with one of the living legends. Sonny Rollins or Wayne Shorter, probably.
I could definitely see them making a Wayne Shorter box. He and Herbie are best mates and I can see them chatting about the idea. Shorter also has had a really diverse career so it could certainly go down a similar route with Weather Report etc.

Replacements are in, and again I'm at work right now so I can't listen too carefully just yet but first impressions... Head Hunters is still dish warped, maybe even worse than my first copy. 😓

All the others -- including 1+1 -- are flat, at least. I didn't hear the surface noise on Maiden Voyage and so far so good with 1+1, so fingers crossed that my Head Hunters bowl is the only issue remaining.

Three out of four replacements seem good. I think there was some popping near the end of Side B of Maiden Voyage but it was fairly quiet and I'm hoping maybe a good cleaning will take care of it. It's not nearly as bad as the surface noise on the first copy. 1+1 and The River are vast improvements.

Head Hunters, on the other hand...

My headhunters is clearly bowled but the oyaide mat and weight combo hide it and it sounds AMAZING!!!
Its actually really crazy just how good it sounds.

I have just got through listening to mine again and it blows any other releases from VMP (in my immediate memory) out of the water. If they had released it as a Classics etc I honestly imagine it would have been one of their most successful releases.

I've got two bowled Head Hunters. Do I risk asking for a third or just give up and settle with "well that's why you bought a weight in the first place"
Heck Yeah you should get a third and as many as it takes til they get you a good one. that set was REALLY pricey and with due respect to the rest of the LPs, Headhunters is kind of the star of the show.
