Vinyl Me Please Anthology

Okay so now that we have established how stupid the pricing is...

Who else is in for this?

Aside from the music obviously, I'm particularly excited for those liner notes, which, I know. But I think they're printed on nice promo style shots of the performers. I love that sort of thing.

I bit and re-upped for the anthology. After reflecting on how much time I have spent in the past few months trying to source used records for my own homebrew Impulse! AAA box set of 50 albums, I decided it's worth the premium to have everything sourced and packaged for me because I'm one of those people who will obsessively refresh my wantlist on discogs to see if there's a new copy of Gloria Coleman Soul Sisters (I'm actually looking for this one, so let me know if you have one to sell!). My family will think it's worth at least $100 extra to have me untethered from the computer.

I am so in for this! I can’t wait to see which Teena Marie album we get! I am actually so excited to see if we get Irons In The Fire or It Must Be Magic!!!

I Need Your Lovin’ is such a sexy, smoky, sharp, funky, jam and Square Biz is one of the most feel-good songs ever! That song just sounds like a pure celebration! I can’t wait to have one of those tracks blasting through on my speakers!!!!!! 😁

And also, anyone remember Teena Marie’s Behind The Groove?!?! That was my favourite track that played on Grand Theft Auto Vice City 😂

And I am also so keen to see what the 2xLP Erykah Badu record is! 🤔

That's why this should be a subscription site. Mods and admins should get a monthly stipend so they can buy some records. I know these are pretty selfless folks, but time shouldn't be free. Just like music and journalism.

May I suggest we begin playing the Airplane Game here? If we're scheming on how to make money for records, then I'll walk like an Egyptian!

I get where you are coming from and I agree if they blame this box not selling the same as blue note on it being female artists it will be ridiculous.

However, Storf seemed to genuinely lament the fact that Nina Simone not only never sold out, but that he got angry emails about it being chosen, and it is without question an essential in my opinion, unlike some sold out classics. So, I don't think observations that records by women didn't sell as well were necessarily misconstruing anything.
I may be alone in this opinion, but the tables have kind of turned in this respect. We, the small vocal minority, are always called out for our opinions and "heated" comments, but when these albums don't sell as VMP expects, it's on their "core" user base, the majority that doesn't say anything, because in my opinion the vocal minority has a much more expansive enjoyment and understanding of music and all it's facets, male, female or otherwise. So when recent actions seem to indicate VMP going out of the way to stifle the vocal minority for fear of negative influence, wouldn't it stand to reason that we could sway it the opposite way as well?

But no, let's not listen to the vocal minority, we know not what we speak of. It's been mentioned in this thread already, and even though it hasn't sold out yet, if it sells in a relative amount of time there will be a Anthology III, IV and so on, as long as they have the base to support 1000 units sold, errors and all, there is no reason to stop producing them. Remember VMP took that turn into a "business" model first and foremost, so Its now more than ever only about the bottom line. Don't kid yourself into thinking it's anything but.

Both the BN and WM Anthology are fantastic ideas, I just can't support the company regardless of what I may miss out on, but there are plenty who do and that's fine. And for those, I always hope there are minimal issues if any.

I had my gripes about the Blue Note problems all the way through. However, I'm not so sure one can say that only the bottom line was/is the concern with this Motown box. It's really a niche item. Seems to me so many more genres/artists they could have focused on that would sell out immediately. This one really has a limited appeal. I'm thankful that this is what they chose. Hopefully, the next thing won't be so perfectly geared toward my tastes because I really need to sit the next one out. ;)

I think people are making a mistake by making a sellout the benchmark for success. Remember that VMP didn’t think that the Blue Note box would sell out, and that was, well, Blue Note. The fact that it did sell out immediately doesn’t mean all the subsequent ones have to clear the same bar. What’s happening now was the original plan. They just got lucky on the first one.

Yeah i mean didn't Storf basically say as much on Reddit? They don't need a sell out.... just consistent, good sales. But I do think not selling out may look bad overall, make them less desirable.

I don't know. I want them to keep doing it, I just hope the price doesn't keep creeping up (it will).

so what are some good audiophile style labels that aren't exclusively focused on jazz (because besides fusion and loud free jazz i am still trying to find my interest in jazz). and probably not mofi because thats SUPER expensive... though i plan on buying a couple from them

The issue is that all their promotional material pushed the "we sold out in three hours, thus you need to jump on this now" to try to gin FOMO up for this set. When all is said and done, 1,000 isn't a lot for a major company to sell (particularly one that touts that they have over 30,000 subscribers). It says something when you cannot get 3% of your customer base who already puts money out monthly to buy your product.

Speakers Corner, Pure Pleasure, Analog Spark... Music On Vinyl is hit and miss but can put out some pretty awesome stuff, but mostly digital transfers...

Those are all at a lower price point than MOFI or Analogue Productions.

Unfortunately if its dubbed "Audiophile" its usually a little more expensive, BUT, you can always look and see if your favorite albums ever got a pressing at Pallas, RTI, Optimal, Analog Sparks and Analog Productions. And yes, OMR MoFi's ;)

thanks for a couple of these... it seems like MOV doesn't really have a store or anything but i checked some of the others

Outside of a focus on jazz and blues, I think it is worth mentioning Rhino. Problem is, it is hard to be sure which ones are really up to audiophile standards and which aren't. Unfortunately research is required. There are some super well done gems in there AAA and digital, almost always in the low twenties price wise. I don't think since quite a while back I have heard of any of them being bad, some are just really great.

Just to be clear where you are thinking budget wise, with respect to MoFi are you saying $30-$35 is super expensive or are you thinking of the crazy one step ones?
