Also, RIP to anyone trying to count Monk’s proper studio albums correctly.
I love that Ray Charles VMP exclusive! It’s amazing! And here I would've thought you'd like his country albums best.
unrelated but i dont really think this list clicks very well... i can understand an album like out to lunch or kind of blue not being as big of a firestarter into loving jazz as everyone else does. dolphy is almost a classical record in how precise it is but i feel like a charles mingus record like let my children hear music would have been a better introduction of a classical like third stream sound to a non jazz head, similarly metal heads, electronic heads, ambient heads, and many other indie music lovers might be ignored by listings like chet baker sings over say in a silent way or the inner flameThe 10 Best Albums For A Jazz Beginner
Oh jazz, you magnificent and beautiful genre. You’re having a bit of a cool-kid comeback, aren’t you, with all those young, hip cats toying with your sounds and messing with your traditions. Good, I say, because you’re a genre that’s incredibly unique and, as a result, seemingly difficult to get...magazine.vinylmeplease.com
This is what making me think it cant be Brilliant Corners. Them releasing that is the kind of record which would see jazz fans sign up to get a copy.Brilliant Corners would almost have to be Essentials right? That would probably be the best Classics pick ever (at the very least top 3).
I also wouldn’t say it was “famously overlooked.”This is what making me think it cant be Brilliant Corners. Them releasing that is the kind of record which would see jazz fans sign up to get a copy.
Exactly! Brilliant Corners is too good to be just a Classics ROTM in my opinion! If Brilliant Corners was ever a ROTM, you would think it would be the December EssentIals ROTM!This is what making me think it cant be Brilliant Corners. Them releasing that is the kind of record which would see jazz fans sign up to get a copy.
The only thing I can see here (and its really stretching it) is that a lot of early critics found his playing style to be too forceful and aggressive. I suppose this could be counted as overlooked, but 'famously' would suggest its someone that was much more obviously overlooked.I also wouldn’t say it was “famously overlooked.”
I don't see anyone taking issue with Let It Be, Imagine, All Things Must Pass, or any Beatles-related Phil Spector production so I think that's overblown. Also cancel culture nowadays has gotten pretty ridiculous.
I would like to think at least one VMP customer would say something, because you know, the whole murdering his girlfriend thing
I wish VMP didn’t care about NaS’ allegations, like how Newbury Comics doesn’t care and did a NaS’ Illmatic exclusive! Preferably as an Essentials ROTM!VMP doesn’t give a rat’s ass. VMP put out a variant of the reissue of Charlie Manson’s album- on blood red vinyl.
I thought it was in poor taste. Of course it sold out. Anything for a buck.
I totally agree with you on cancel culture.
I’ll disagree re: Spector/Beatles recordings. Let it Be Naked and the later non Spectorized All Things Must Pass sound way better than the originals.
Monk would be a nice Classics choice. A good one to help people forget the price hikes a bit. But remember how we had it pegged as Dylan last month... and we got the Bar-Kays.
