Vinyl Me Please Classics

Holy shit guys! They're moving Classics to GZ?! What the fuck is this nonsense?

That's kind of like saying that the grilled chicken may now be fried or broiled or baked depending on the cooking implements available but it's still chicken. If you just want chicken (Ryan Smith mastered classics its fine), but if you care about the quality of the result or healthiness of it (the pressing quality) that's a big ole loss.

Swapped Barbara Lea for Hub of Hubbard. The announcement blurb tried to draw parallels to Blossom Dearie, but I just didn't find it as instantly appealing as Blossom.

I don't think it's a bad pick at all, I'm just not too big on vocal jazz in general so for an album to draw me in, it has to really knock it out of the park. And Barbara Lea doesn't do that for me.

Disappointing, but not especially surprising with everything going on in the world. As a reminder, we have had GZ-pressed Classics in the past, it was only since I think Al Green's Call Me that VMP went out of their way to get it pressed at QRP (and even then you still had the occasional exception like Erroll Garner being at Furnace).

GZ's biggest issues seem to arise when they're doing larger runs like with Essentials and some of the more popular RHH releases. Hopefully a smaller print run and no color shenanigans should result in Classics still being overall solid releases.

I think they've already done some at RTI recently. It was only a matter of time they would need to use GZ again at some point. Maybe when Chad ups his capacity they'll be able to use QRP exclusively.

Yeah, "one time GZ used to do good work" doesn't cut it for me. Lots of great records I've gotten recently have all been marred by the GZ special. I've already cancelled before this decision, but as classics was my main draw I'm feeling loads better about the decision.
Same boat as you. My 3 month membership was up last month and I was tempted to go back for Hopkins, but don't really have the desire to now.

I have a couple of months to decide whether to get Modest Mouse or roll the dice on a run outside of VMP. I'm heavily leaning towards the latter.

It's a lot of money. Like looking at the cost an absurd amount of money for diminishing value.

honestly i think all the "Gz bad only QRP or Pallas or high end pressing plant" thing has kinda drained me... so i kinda gave up on caring because every month there is the same anger about Gz despite the fact that i don't think its just Gz that's the issue (seeing as i listen to a lot of vinyl that has been pressed at Gz with no issues... issues are more overproduction and horrible storage and having to press way too many copies with not a lot of plates is my guess). i can totally see why a lot of people are angry... i just got nowhere else to go

and i am picking up sylvester

Even Pauly is in that thread saying he's disappointed in the decision. Man's life is about to get so much worse.
Think about how much less bullshit VMP CS has to deal with since Classics albums are usually done right the first time. This will add a whole other stream of QC issues that they will likely have to contend with and I would guess, your typical Classics subscriber is a bit more particular than your current Essentials subscriber.

I guess this will end the “everything but Classics” qualifier most folks apply to their VMP criticisms moving forward.

Yeah it's very disappointing. Hopefully there are no pressing wide clusterfucks like with Mars Volta, Outkast, Wu-Tang, etc. and the worst thing that happens is me requesting more replacements for warped or off-center or non-fill vinyl.

Even when it wasn't pressing-wide, I'm still getting noise on things like Grizzly Bear and Meters.
It's varying degrees mind you, but I wouldn't be so upset if I didn't pay THAT much more for a record.

It's an easy decision now for me to quit. Even if there's a chance it could still be all good within Classics...there's always that sense of dread about to put on an Essentials or RHH album for me, and now that extends to Classics? No thanks.
