Vinyl Me Please Essentials

bargain bin with St. Vincent/Mitski/Slaeter-Kinney
The male, new-release ROTMs (Moses Sumney, Kevin morby, and badbadnotgood) are also VMP barrel binners
i take offense to those because they ere really good and moses sumney does not need to be put in the same space as kevin morby (i learned i really dont like kevin morby)

Looks like this is surprisingly the first year I haven't swapped any Essentials. Here's a stab at ranking:
  1. Van Morrison (a favorite album for years - glad to have this edition)
  2. Aretha Franklin (favorite color of the year, incidentally)
  3. Flaming Lips (another long-time fave)
  4. Phoenix (noticeably better sounding than the standard version)
  5. Loretta Lynn (unexpected sleeper hit of the year)
  6. De La Soul (fun listen)
  7. Jorge Ben (funky & great sound)
  8. Flying Lotus (complicated listen, but grew on me)
  9. QOTSA (just not a huge fan, tbh 🤷‍♂️)
  10. Experience Unlimited (kind of forgettable - need to revisit though)
  11. Jim Sullivan (the production kind of ruined it - as mentioned in the liner notes, even)
  12. Sleater-Kinney (a couple of decent songs, but overall not for me)

My collection is an attempt to accumulate actually essential classic albums, that I like. Looking back, the essentials track helped me more than I thought at the time.

1. De La Soul (the record I signed up for)
2. Aretha Franklin (the record that convinced me to re-sign up; it was surprisingly hard for me to find high-quality reissues or OGs. I was gonna buy an Aretha comp until I got news of this release).
3. Loretta Lynn
4. QOTSA
5. Flaming Lips
6. Flying Lotus
7. Phoenix
8. Van Morrison
9. Jorge Ben

I would have bought the albums listed above, so it was nice to not have to bother with tracking them down. And I’d rather have a new reissue than a VG older copy (with a variety of ranges of what that means).

I wouldn’t have gotten:

10. Experience Unlimited.
11. Sleater-Kinney.

I did not receive Jim Sullivan and actually cancelled my sub because it pissed me off so much.

Read my post again, I wasn't talking about quality, and never said they weren't good
For real. There’s a reason I scour the literal bargain bin of any record store. One man’s trash...

No joke, it's one of my favorite albums of the entire decade. Although I will cede the point that as far as monetary value it's not hard to find it for cheap because too many people don't know what they're missing.

Absolutely love that record as well. One of the top records of 2017 for me. Spun the hell out of that.

Does anybody have any idea what record could be getting pressed for the first time in april for essentials? It's the only thing that's keeping me on the fence with VMP right now...

How has “one of the first punk albums” never been released on vinyl? Unless punk really wasn’t punk until 2000?
That's what's weird. Punk was started in the mid to late 70's, where vinyl was still pretty prominent. I don't know what band released their album without it being on vinyl...
I'm thinking this is a slip-up/wording issue - they probably meant to say "never been reissued" - not "released".

Edit: wait... re-read the original post. He only said "first time on vinyl". I guess he could have missed the word "reissued", but yeah, confusing...

Damn can’t think of many early punk bands with a QOTSA overlap except the Germs. Maybe their Anthology? Pat Smear of course joined Nirvana and the Foo Fighters. I think John Doe of X may have worked with Josh Homme at some point too.

This. Judging from the source he probably misread the wiki entry. I will say trying to decipher what Storf is attempting to convey when dropping clues adds a whole extra layer of intrigue to his hints.
It could be something that was never released. But lots of things that would fit with that were put out in the 90s or so.

Especially with how divisive when/where punk began is, I don't trust Storf at all on this genre being correct.
