Vinyl Me Please Essentials

They could have done something really cool with Veckatimest or Merriweather (both came out 10 years ago this year - and both are better albums than WAP). Also, this feels like such a ubiquitous album just like with Arctic Monkeys last year. It furthers my opinion that VMP is backsliding. Now all those gripes aside...I do like this album and don't own it, so I'll probably keep it. Hypocritical? Yeah probably.

But imagine a nice remastered Merriweather on some crazy swirl colored vinyl. I own that album already (and Veckatimest) but VMP could elevate the pressings that are out there.
Yes this is the exact same pick as AM to me. Generic and entirely skippable records.

I mean, to each their own. This is a much more essential pick for my collection than some of the other Essential picks so your milage may vary.
Everyone's definition is different but this was a pretty big album in the indie ald alternative scene when it came out. It might not be my favorite choice but I would say it's Essential.

Plus. Essential is just a marketing term anyway.

"The opportunity to do the 10th anniversary came up after we stopped selling in the store, and the opportunity to do this special version came up, and we took it. Sorry about that!"

Yeah, I don't buy that at all. They got it all arranged, planned, and pressed since February?

If they did manage to pull that off I'd be worried about warping issues from cooling the records improperly off the press because of the rush.

Honestly I was shocked this whole album was cut to tape. I was figuring there was a DAW involved at some point. Perhaps the final "analog" master is a bump to tape from the DAW, which a lot of artists due to add some tape distortion to the final digital master. This makes me wonder if the OG Euro LP which was cut at the Exchange where the CD master was made was also from this analog tape, or if it's just the CD master cut to wax.

I'll be keeping this as I would take an RKS cut over an WG/NRP cut any day of the week, and the "analog" is a bonus. The mirror board cover looks pretty stupid IMO, but messing with the art has become their MO.

Im also incredibly suspicious of the true nature of this "analog tape"

AM was a great album and the pressings super good! Arctic Monkeys are an important band for that time.

Phoenix had 2 good singles and an all right album. For that time the album wasn't important in my opinion. This plus selling the album earlier this year was just not a good move. Seems like they were offloading stock of something they already had before getting this version out.

VMP doing a pressing of Merriweather would of been something "essential" for any collection.

VMP's biggest issue is that they are VERY quickly running out of swaptions. I was able to grab one of the last copies of Journey in Satchinanda this time around but looking forward to next month theres not really anything left that I would personally pay $27 for to justify the monthly price. As far as Phoenix goes, I'm happy about it. I can see how it can be an INCREDIBLE pick to many people out there, that album is nostalgia food. Shit it reminds me of being 17 years old sitting on my couch playing Forza Horizon, blissfully ignorant to the joys of being young. :-[.
