Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Listened to Mayer (amongst others) wore white college “the game” baseball caps with double entendre type names embroidered across the front with the likes of “Cocks” or “Beavers” on em. heavily clad in Abercrombie & Fitch, the “non-punk” Doc Martens and probably a giant hog of wintergreen Skol tucked into their lower lip.
You guys have a local team that is the Cocks too? Thought that was a South Carolina thing. Also thought preppy kids with chaw was a southern thing. Unfortunately that was more popular around me in college, people spitting into their empty Gatorade bottles in class.

I’m 37 so went to high school around the same time as you. The cool kids listened to rap and rock. I listened to John Mayer.....begrudgingly in the grocery store that I worked in at the time, on the occasional elevator and for as few seconds as possible after starting my moms car if she was the last one driving it and the radio was tuned into her station.
Almost like we went to different high schools

Also 36 from a rich suburban high school. Dave Matthews was the biggest thing for the popular crowd, and it made me hate them so much. That changed after going to a few shows after hs though, and luckily it was split with a hippy crowd.

Yeah I always gave the “Dave” people more slack given the stoner vibes the band put out. John Mayer was more date rapey

is VMP deleting comments? just before I saw someone posted a reply that basically said "please don't let it be John Mayer, a guy who said that his dick was a white supremacist the same month you promised to support black artists".
I didn't quite remember it exactly, but it was a beautiful response to a shit pick and now that comment is gone.

I can’t wait for them to get so much backlash, and rightfully so, when this drops tomorrow 🍿

I wish I knew a lot of the stuff I listen to now when I was in high school. Wasn't til the mid 2000s when I started discovering any indie rock. I was mostly Metallica, Maiden, Limp Bizkit and mainstream hip hop back then 😩
I’m sorry my friend. We all make weird decisions. I mostly listened to ska in high school (with being really into Radiohead and NIN saving me)

I'm HS class of 1990 and I honestly hadn't heard John Mayer before this other than his name. Mind you, I was doing a post-doc in Montreal around that time and I don't think this kind of music was in the fabric of that city.

Anyway, I played it and it really does nothing for me. I'll leave it at that because people have differing tastes and I know there are quirky things I enjoy.

Don’t you dare feel bad about ska! Reel Big Fish, catch-22, Less Than Jake, Pietasters, Mephiskapholes, mustard plug, the specials, suicide machines, Spring Heeled Jack, Dance Hall Crashers, and so on and so forth all put on really fun shows and/or had good albums! It’s ska, the music so ridiculous, you just gotta be happy!!

Oh no, they would purposely buy a Gamecocks or Oregon State Beavers or Morehead St hat just because they thought it was funny and edgy. Subtly is not a teenage boys strong suite

That would be ska-punk, it’s pretty universally terrible. ska is a totally different type of, much superior, imo, music!
