I wonder if they are throwing out entries for writing "Sigur Ros - Agaetis byrjun" without any of those fancy characters.

I've honestly wondered the same thing, too.

doesn't he have a much broader appeal than, say, Patrick Watson? the fact that he's being mentioned here is basically the only reason why I thought of Rufus - I just don't think Patrick is that famous or even known (outside of Canada and some European countries) to be anywhere near the Essentials label

If you are picking a Rufus Wainwright album as an Essential you are going with either, his Self-Titled Debut or, more than likely; Poses.

You guys are way over thinking this 2012 “Indie” release is gonna be Grimes. It’s the most obvious and thus the likely pick. Mac DeMarco makes more sense than Patrick Wilson or Wainwright but even that feels less likely than Grimes.

How are they even doing this? Are they running it through a computer (which could cause issues with SIgur Ros submissions) or is someone checking and grading all these answers by hand like a high school teacher?

I think they are overthinking because it said "indie rock"... Grimes isn't really indie ROCK, indie synthpop, maybe synthwave, but I dunno if anyone has claimed her music to be rock

I mean some songs on art angels have some indie rock elements like "flesh without blood", "Kill v Maim", "California" and maybe "Venus fly", and misanthroposcene does have rock elements, but visions is almost exclusively ethereal synth pop

They did put it in “quotes” and 2012 was around the time that the Rockist bias in indie music criticism began to cede and influential publications; like Pitchfork, began embracing a more Popist view. I think Grimes has a lot overlap with indie artist. Definitely not Rock but VMP has never been super great at categorization anyways.

Wish the Montreal-based pick was Land of Talk. But it doesn't match the clues. Land of Talk and Elizabeth Powell need more attention.

Oh I don't mind visions being it (even if Grimes has ruined her public reputation faster than you can say "yo Taylor" with all the Elon musk stuff and NFT support), it's more just getting at storf for being a meme
