Vinyl Me Please Essentials

One person in that place that shall not be named guessed Patrick Watson for the Montreal artist...
I feel like it actually fits "Montreal Indie Rock" better than the two most popular guesses. Whether it's essential on the other hand...
Yeah, great album! Used to own it but sold the pressing because it was so noisy.

Yeah I’m not much a fan of Von. LCW is essential but I have the most recent reissue of it. Is that OOP? It was available for $20 or so for a long time and sounds great. I *think* it was recorded to tape too so if they somehow can do an AAA pressing that would be awesome. Otherwise I’m out for both of those. What about the 2012 album?
I passed on LCW at $50 on Discogs a few months back. Now the only ones I can find are $70-100.

Yeah, but what I'm referring to is the fact that VMP is labelling the pick as a solo act, when that's not actually the case...as I ninja-edited though there's a high chance VMP would overlook this when formulating the clues.
Pat is brilliant but would definitely be a harder sell than either Grimes or MDM. and what about Rufus Wainwright, could he possibly be considered "indie"? or was it "indie rock"?

I take back my comment about the most recent reissue of LCW sounding great. It’s passable. I think a much better reissue would be nice. Plus my copy is riddled with pops and noise.

also, it's maybe his 4th best record so hardly essential by any stretch of that definition

I can't fathom it being "essential" in the broader sense, but Pond was a beloved Portland trio that is reuniting for shows in early 2022, and their 1997 Rock Collection is an unheralded classic. Some have described them as a cross between Weezer and Nirvana, which resonates. I hear shades of early Everclear as well.

Again, no chance they are the VMP pick, but they fit the clues and it's a great album worth a mention here. Definitely essential in a late 90's PNW kind of way. Check it out:

Agreed it won't be with VMP, but the vinyl reissue campaign has 12 days left and is already funded (Edit: just saw that you figured that out!). I actually help the label, Latent Print Records, out with promotions, stocking at local shops, and selling merch at shows.

I completely agree with you that the band deserves more notice :) Here's hoping the success of the reissue & shows gets Sub Pop to consider the s/t & Practice.

my one real kinda issue with the sigur ros choice is that it kinda has the kind of issue many other worshipped albums have for me, I've heard the first big song hundreds of times, remember almost none of the rest, and thus gives a weirdly bitter taste in my mouth, i am fine with trying it out, just all i think of is the constant "tju" of svefn-g-englar and no other major moments

In general, I respect the yawn, but have you listened to Perfect from Now On? A desert island disc for me.

Given that PFNO just saw a reissue in 2020, it's probably Lonesome Crowded West. Which is peak Modest Mouse in my opinion, just a shade or two better than This is a Long Drive...

1997 was also the release year for Either/Or, and Dig Me Out as someone already mentioned. A damn good year in the PNW.

No disrespect to you or your preferences intended.
It falls squarely at 5 on the 10 scale - for me.

In addition to Either/Or or Dig Me Out, there were numerous others that were on the 1997 table that would have piqued my interest. Homework, Whatever and ever Amen, The Colour and the Shape, Hand It Over, In it For The Money, Supra Dupa Fly, Strangers Almanac, F♯ A♯ ∞, Vegas, Homogenic, Life Through A Lens, Urban Hymns, Around the Fur…for starters.

But I’m glad you are getting a White Whale off your list.
Maybe one day they’ll press Midnight Radio and I’ll be psyched while everyone else is yawning.

No disrespect taken. Just wanted to make sure you had actually given it a listen before dishing out the yawn!

My 2007 copy of PFNO sounds great, so I won’t be reaching back into the VMP cookie jar unless it happens and they really sweeten the pot. And if so, I would be excited for those that get the opportunity to discover this one for the first time. All of that said, I would definitely bet on it being Modest Mouse over BTS.

Well - it has been a minute since I sat down with it.
Maybe I’ll go back and try to listen with a fresh perspective.

This wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been proven wrong.

basically my opinions are this

Sigur Ros: might skip, might not, i think i prefer ( ) overall though as its more texture based and less anthemic
Mac Demarco: SKIP, i never liked him and even seeing him at shaky knees didn't change that
Grimes: probably will stay, i had a mixed opinion with the more.. abrasive sound of the album at first but i think i can enjoy
Modest Mouse: EASY stay, classic album, i don't own, it be cool to own

Someone in the Country thread mentioned that nobody has gotten more than 8/12 guesses right so far. Makes me think that the two popular guesses in Essentials are wrong. I think Sigur Ros is a lock (there is nothing else from that time period that fits - the other big icelandic album from that time is Bjork's Homogenic but the members don't fit), but I am definitely wondering if the other two are in fact Patrick Watson and Built to Spill, and people have been focusing on Grimes/Mac Demarco and Modest Mouse.

I'm convinced now that the PNW band is 100% Built to Spill. I can see Perfect From Now on over Lonesome Crowded West. If they were to do a Modest Mouse album I think they would do Moon and Antarctica or Good News in that order. LCW is definitely a great album, but it's the least accessible for an Essentials pick.

Could be that we have all figured out the 12 picks, but no one is getting them all 12 right at the same time.
Yes, it's possible. For the essentials picks alone one has a possibility of three different albums, and the other two. One of the hip hop tracks I know for sure still has two possible guesses (Ice T and DOC)...I think Classics aside from possibly Chic is wide open. Not sure about Country.

Guessing them all correctly in one go is a challenge.

Exactly, could just be Storf being Storf. He used to play these word games all the time on the old forum.

I think Built to Spill would be one of their most inspired picks in a long time. That said, Perfect From Now On could easily be ruled out given that someone has guessed it, unless Storf gonna Storf.

I don't think it rules it out. The game is to guess them all correctly in one submission. 8/12 means they could've gotten it right, but failed on at least 4 other picks somewhere. I'm not interpreting this to mean 4/12 have not been guessed yet.

Do we need to consider that the "Montreal-based Indie Rock" album might be Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! ?
That album consists of a 12" and a 7" with a weird playing order (I think it's Side A of the 12", then Side A of the 7" and so on).

I can only imagine the confusion coming from unknowing members.
