Vinyl Me Please Essentials

I usually don't gripe much about Essentials picks, 'cause you can always just swap. But I'm really hoping VMP gets off of this modern country albums as Essentials strategy. That's why you have a Country track. And let's be honest, some of those country albums have been waaaaaaay more Essential than Sam Hunt, or Kayce Musgraves.

I do, however, remain intrigued by the '68 rock pick for January. And I'm legit stoked for Air if that does indeed slot in for February. Somehow I've never pulled the trigger on Moon Safari, and would very much like to have a nice copy of it.

What is with the Kacey Musgraves slander in here? 🤔

It's a great album, but widely and cheaply available.
Eh, country isn't everyone's cup o' tea. Especially modern country.
I like Sturgill but it's not a genre I'm going to seek out unless it's spoon fed to me tbh.

Depending on what the Rock Essentials is, I'm probably going to stick to Classics and RHH. I'm not going to upgrade my Moon Safari.

Kacey Musgraves is a great pick if you're going to do Country and Same Trailer, Different Park is a really good album; however, it is available quite cheaply. I don't get spending 35 bucks on a VMP version of a modern album like this when it's available readily for 10-15 bucks

I have both Anthem of The Sun, my only Grateful Dead record BTW, and White Light/White Heat, also the only VU album I own, both copies are in rough shape and I rarely if ever spin them and have not thought about upgrading so January might be a pass... gotta check them again, I remember really enjoying the Dead record

I remember passing on the Air record when I saw it for under $20 a few years ago...might be a while ago I have no concept of time...how are the previous pressings and are they expensive/hard to get?

Not a fan of country music so that's an easy pass..

I do enjoy my copy of Air. It doesn't blow me away, but it's good enough I don't think I need any upgrade for the cost.
I have this one.

I love the Dead but I would never consider Anthem of the Sun an essential album. It’s a tough one for non-Deadheads to get in to if they’re looking for an intro to the Dead.

I would also be out on the VU. Now, if it was VU’s Loaded, I would be all for it!
I don't get why either of those would even be considered. they both have had really excellent reissues recently. there's just not a lot that vmp is going to be able to improve upon.

I have both also, and I mostly agree, AIR is probably the more popular of the two but with the UNKLE pick you get all those guests, DJ Shadow, Mike D, Thom Yorke, etc…
Yeah, that UNKLE is one of my favourites. The pressing I have though leaves absolutely nothing to be desired.
If I were to pick one of the two needing an upgrade it's definitely Air over UNKLE.

Was March the month Storf said was going to make people say “VMP is going for it” or some bullshit? Because selling $40 copies of an album you can get for like $12 is certainly going for something…
My guess is he was referring to the VU/Dead selection? I haven’t been following all that close though.

My Black vinyl copy of Moon Safari sounds excellent to be honest.

Now the GITD version is a bit noisier but as far as GITD records go, it sounds fairly decent.
