Vinyl Me Please Rap & Hip Hop

I think Frank Ocean's Channel Orange is more essential pick then S.80 which I think is a pure RHH pick

Also, I think more vinyl fans are waiting for Channel Orange before S.80. Yea, I do think more Frank Ocean fans are subbed than Kendrick fans
I think if Section 80 was pressed in normal RHH numbers it would sell out super fast and be worth a hell of a lot more than Saba and Noname, is all I'm saying.

I wasn't saying which one is more popular with vinyl fans, I was just saying I'd be surprised to meet a Frank Ocean fan who had never heard of Kendrick.

I agree with @Jonathan Y here. In the overall scheme of things I think if you put Channel Orange up against Section 80 for essentials Frank wins this one in terms of popularity and how many want list's it sits on
I'm not sure why that's the debate though. People were just saying that they thought Section 80 could do Essentials numbers, not sure how it turned into which would sell better. I guess my thoughts were just that I'd be very surprised if Section 80 was close to the worst selling Essentials of all time.

Apologies maybe I misunderstood the whole back & forward and turned the conversation a bit left. There is definitely room for both in Essentials in my opinion, I would love nothing more than that. I just think Frank's Channel Orange would appeal more to the masses than Section 80 IF we were pitting them against one another but...as we are not doing that & Section 80 is Essential in K.Dots career & he is an Essential artist. I think @Jonathan Y assessment that the average person probably thinks GKMC is the start of KDots discography is correct though. Feel like I'm struggling to explain it all now tbh 😂

Not too long over a nap after work on the sofa maybe this is all the ramblings of a mad man. I know what I'm trying to say but....🤦‍♂️😂

It's essential to the real hip hop heads, but I am quite certain the average essential subscriber either has hardly heard of Kendrick or looks at GKMC as the first album
You think there's tons of subscribers who have hardly heard of Kendrick but are big Frank Ocean fans?

I guess my point to Nathan was, even tho I think Kendrick is an Essential artist, i dont think this particular album in his discography would be classified as an essential pick. I think TPAB is and maybe GKMC, but that's me. Then I replied to ur post taking into account the want for a CO press vs. S80lol!! Im at work and havent smoked today im all over the place! I personally think yes, it would do well, but don't think it falls under an essential album category for this service

Essentials is just a name. Its just marketing. And before they added the other subs essentials was a section of their curated store.

What I'm saying is, you've already thought about this more than VMP ever will.

This is true. There is no way the Cale Mix of the stooges would be the most “essential” to own in their small discography. I have no problem with the choices for the Essentials line and them often choosing lesser known gems from well known artists. The only issue is the “Essentials” name. I know they just branded it after they made options for Classics and RHH to be available as primary tracks, but I dont see why it still couldnt just be called “Record of the Month”. “Essentials” leave it open for too much criticism

For what its worth, I could easily see them selling Section 80 as essential for the mere point that it is his debut and where things began (to write their copy for them). GKMC, TPAB, and Damn are all too widely owned and recent to be a pick now. I could also see a variant of Kendrick next album being an essential pick if not his debut.

With that being said, Channel Orange would literally be the biggest possible essential pick, particularly if they had any sort of exclusivity window to it. There would be the type of feeding frenzy that they tried to provoke for Songs for the Deaf. I'd expect them to announce it in advance and require 3 month or longer subscriptions for that one.

I'm horrendous at these numbers clues and this doesn't rate but.....I'm gonna throw an album out there i wish I had on vinyl & probably not many do. Diddy Dirty Money - Last Train To Paris

Yeah, I get they don’t want to support Nas in any way but don’t even make a 90s Hip-Hop list if youre not going to include Illmatic. And that’s just the most obvious problem.

This list hurts the credibility of their “magazine”. Hot takes and different opinions are cool but this comes off as way more self promotional than a legitimate list.
It’s not a real list though it’s just their staff’s favorite albums. Just goes to show it may be time for some new blood up in there.

That list wrote itself from a current selling or previous sales pov. It was biased. I agree new blood is needed though they don't listen to customers in that regard enough either

i really am not bothered by the list

sure lil kim and da brat are dumb but most are pretty well regarded albums, and maybe its because i haven't listened to ready to die in a while and no tupac, and have the unpopular opinion that illmatic peaks at lifes a bitch and then goes into just being OK because i just dont like the beats to the world is yours and memory lane

Me neither. Staff probably don't believe in it fully themselves. Its a promo piece for a business nothing more

Ok, but, OutKast, Mobb Deep, Gang Starr, Mos Def, GZA, Raekwon, Ghostface, The Roots, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Pharcyde, Organized Konfusion, etc. I could keep going.

Agree with others that it is a dumb promo thing clearly, so yeah, not bothered, just calling it as I see it.
