Vinyl Me Please Rap & Hip Hop

In here I must be the only one pro Future. I had to double check the reception of it and I'm glad I ain't the only one in the world that rates it

i think part of the hate related to reviews from people like fantano who panned it saying the only good song was move that dope or spectrum pulse who hated every part of it because the lyrics, plus pitchfork even kinda lowered their praise on the DS2 review

There’s been a backlash against sophomore album Honest in the past year—even Future has distanced himself from the project, which he released before the ugly demise of his relationship with ex-fiancée Ciara. But Honest wasn’t a bad album by any means; it was just confused. It was obvious Future was being tugged in too many directions at once: the sledgehammer street bangers, the poignant lone ranger ballads, the big-name collabs with Kanye and Pharrell.

Was the pitchfork review done by the same person?

80/100 on Metacritic is a really great score

VMP briefly touched on Cilvia Demo before when talking about The Suns Tirade

no

the DS2 review was meghan garvey

while honest was craig jenkins

a problem was that honest came out at the EXACT time the anti mumble rap train was coming and mark from spectrum pulse was angry that most of the lines were about doing drugs and fucking your girlfriend

Yeah I remember the whole anti mumble movement and I think your right it was around this time. I wasn't always a fan of this kind of music either but I personally just think Future is dope in trap music, I never really got into Pluto at all but when Honest dropped it definitely worked for me and I've been a fan since then. Although I do feel he peaked at ds2 and the mixtapes around it, since then everything's been mostly ok or not great. I think he has better projects still in him to come too though

Big Future fan too, Honest would probably be a cop for me, probably sits around the middle of his discography for me as like a decent 6/10, always thought it was a bit underrated but it is a mixed bag. Great intro track, singles all very good imo, the title track is a classic future croony autotune banger, Covered N Money is a very underrated Sonny Digital beat, Sh!t is among Mike Will''s best too, there's a god damn Andre 3k verse, but I understand the criticisms. Biggest issue with the project is the length, 64 mins is just too long when you have that bad aul run of tunes from Blood, Sweat, Tears to How Can I Not, the project would be better if you just dropped those 5 songs straight up. All that said Cilvia Demo is 10x the better pick and would be a pretty hype project to drop

Oh thats the deluxe version at 64 minutes. I was always more familiar personally with the standard version at 47. I didn't have streaming back then and listened to the cd over and over again I absolutely loved it & still do enjoy it till this day. Its something I personally want on vinyl so it works for me. Cilvia Demo is superior so I will be extremely happy if it is this. If its Nicki though 🤦🏻‍♂️

I wish I got the Future DS2 VMP exclusive! I actually really like that album! DS2 is 🔥🔥🔥

Every other Future album though in my opinion has been mediocre for me! 😅

are we excluding the mixtapes? because then there is monster as well
I was thinking of just albums at the time I text it but no go ahead and include those. Some excellent mixtapes. He had a great run with Monster Beast Mode & 56 Nights 🔥

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 😭😭😭

I don’t want to force myself to like an album I find mediocre...🥺

Just kidding 😛 haha ! Ain’t no way I’m liking Future’s Honest! I’m proud to say that Future’s Honest will be my first R&HH skip! 😜

Did you cave on Rick Ross? Thought that might have been your first skip.

I swapped my Salt n Pepa for Ross in the end. Seems like their theme for RHH this year is albums that just haven't been pressed in a long time, or ever... no matter how good they are. It's at least something different than widely available color variants, since people seem to complain about those a ton.

That said... in 2 years we've only seen 3 hip hop albums in essentials (Clipse, De La Soul, and The Roots). Hopefully we see a big drop soon.

Kind of glad it'll probably be something I'm not interested in. I'm definitely keeping the White Stripes for Essentials and will... probably keep whatever Classics ends up being. I always like having one track available for swaption purposes in case they put something worth grabbing in there (and if there's nothing there I might ask for Shabaka).
