Vinyl Me Please Rap & Hip Hop

Oh god, is Coolio the front runner?

I had a weird experience with Coolio. When I was at Uni he did a gig at our campus and at the end went to the bar and chatted to people. He was super creepy to a few of my mates (girls). One of the guys were chatting to him saying he recently learnt how to play Gangsters Paradise on his guitar and Coolio said he would come to the house the next day for a jam session. So the next day we were at the house not really expecting him to turn up....but he does. He cooks up a massive meal for everyone, drinks a bit, then jams out to Gangsters Paradise.

Now for the creepy bit. The guy must have been 50 at the time, yet we later realise that the reason he turned up is that he wanted to sleep with one of the girls (and I know that saying this is awful, but let's just say she was known for not holding back when it comes to such things, especially if she could say it was someone 'famous'). She was around 19-20 at the time. Coolio was around 50. The guy seemed nice but that's still very creepy to me.
He used to come in to the Fridayā€™s I worked at about 15 years ago and buy coke off of one of the bartenders. Apparently he had relations with one of the younger female bartenders there also. Same deal she was like 18 and had a thing for celebrities, he was super friendly to everyone.

Isn't every Coolio single a cover of a Lakeside or Stevie Wonder song... didn't get the appeal then and still don't
First gig I ever saw. Coolio live in Dublin 1997 I was 12 lol I had a ball. I already had his first 2 albums on CD from a young age, bought his third My Soul cd at the gig. Got My Soul on vinyl now too. I would like It Takes A Thief & Gangstas Paradise on vinyl for the collection. His albums are a lot of fun to me maybe because I loved them as a kid

Cool.

It's equally mundane and trite hip-hop to me.
There are a thousand hip-hop albums of greater cultural and musical importance to me. Coolio would be another lazy VMP RHH choice imo.

I respect that. If i got to to choose the ROTM Coolio is nowhere gonna be anywhere near the top of my own choosing for sure. Just if it happens to be him I wouldn't be mad personally

Gotcha! I wouldā€™ve been asking him so many weird questions if he was happy to chat! šŸ˜‚

Omg, and the Coolio cooking and dancing wouldā€™ve had me going ā€œyaaaas kween! Dip it low Coolio! Work those damn hips daddyā€ šŸ˜‚
Did you know Coolio has a cookbook? Cookin' with Coolio: 5 Star Meals at a 1 Star Price I brought it to a White Elephant gift exchange at my work a few years back. Maybe we'll get it as a bundle with Gangsta's Paradise.

Y - I won't be mad either I just won't understand the choice.

For me, the top five 90ā€™s albums Iā€™d hope to get as the Rap & Hip-Hop ROTM would be:

Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus
Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt
Freestyle Fellowship - Innercity Griots
NaS - Illmatic
Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx

I want a great/definitive pressing of NaSā€™ Illmatic and Raekwonā€™s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx! The Most recent reissue of Reasonable Doubt was disappointing too! We need those classics to get the VMP treatment! šŸ’Æ

I would love to see Bahamadiaā€™s Kollage and Gang Starrā€™s Hard To Earn to receive the VMP treatment too! That would be sick! šŸ¤Ÿ

What I hope it would be and what VMP would likely do are usually very different things.

Some things I personally would like to see repressed but VMP will almost certainly never do.
The Coup: Steal this Album
Company Flow: Funcrusher +
Freestyle Fellowship: Inner City Griots
Luniz: Operation Stackola
The Automator: A Much Better Tomorrow
ATU: South Central Thynk Tank
DJ Krush: Kakusei
The 1st 2 Sondbombing Comps
The Project Blowed Comp

Even if they repressed some of the things Get On Down has already done since those pressing are usually pretty poor that would be more interesting

Missed out and prices are extortionate, want the proper artwork too
Yeah, shame about the proper artwork! The pressing sounds amazing though! Itā€™s such a great sounding reissue! Itā€™s truly a joy to spin on the turntable! Iā€™m definitely making sure I grab ā€œCreepin On Ah Come Upā€ for this years RSD!!! Canā€™t wait to grab that one and spin it! šŸ¤—
