I think a thing with Death Grips is that fans and even the band to an extent embrace the fact that their unconventional nature has made them something of a meme and have fun with it.

I've had people look at my sideways from time to time, I don't usually just play them for people unprompted because they can be a lot to take in, but I've met people who only know them through meme status and have a certain idea of their music because of that. My point was that people have told me that "Death Grips is bad" and expressed incredulity that I like them "unironically" but it hasn't spoiled my love for their music.
They’re def abrasive. I was a fan of Hella years before DGs so I already knew what to expect from Zach Hill and it didn’t disappoint.

I think the thing about DG is it's hip-hop mixed with a bunch of different stuff. I think the band themselves would probably admit that they stray further and further from the hip-hop archetypes with each album. I think Exmilitary is a very hip-hop album but Year of the Snitch is basically an experimental rock album that just so happens to have Ride rapping on it.

That's a funny thing a lot of people take for granted, compared to Hella and Zach's solo work, Death Grips is a lot more accessible in comparison with recognizable hooks and song structures.

i've listened to a few DG albums and Rides flow/cadence doesn't come of to me as rapping that's what has me most confused when people call it Hip Hop, be i'm well aware Hip Hop can be very experimental lyrically, production wise and also to an extent on vocal delivery.

its probably pro tools (not a great choice), grandmasters (considered from what i hear a pretty decent album, but i haven't heard it but it seems the criticism of gzas flow is still there), or return to the 36 chambers (i find it kinda unlikely if just because there is going to be a 7" box set for RSD drop 2)

I’d much rather just a 2xLP pressing of Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s Return To The 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version instead of a 9x7’’LP pressing! Like I don’t want 9 discs of a single album...🙅‍♂️

then how do i figure out what albums are good..

i want to be happy.

I can’t help ya there but as far as music exploration goes. I read reviews of critics that have similar taste to mine. I might not always agree with their reviews but if the description intrigues me I may investigate further and give some singles or music videos a go and if that gets me excited I will download the entire album.

sometimes i hear music and at first i dont like it but then later on, maybe in a different setting, i hear it again and im like THIS IS FIYAH! lol
This. Plus Also I have aged into (and occasionally out of) music too. I am much more patient with music now than I was in my teens and 20s. It was tough for me to really get behind songs that over 5 minutes in length. Now I am all about a nice long jam which has allowed me to enjoy stuff like The Grateful Dead and Jazz.
