Vinyl Me Please Rap & Hip Hop

As someone who loves Radiohead, please do not trust a website who has three Radiohead albums in their list of the top ten albums of all time.
Omg, I just looked and yes! The 1st and 2nd top ranked albums of all-time are both Radiohead albums....

Then the 3rd and 4th top ranked albums of all-time are both Pink Floyd albums....

I love Radiohead and Pink Floyd but that is a joke...the fact that the top 4 is held by only two bands!

Also the 3 top highest rated hip-hop albums of all time on RateYourMusic are:

1. Kendrick Lamar - TPAB
2. Kanye West - MBDTF
3. Kendrick Lamar - GKMC

Like.....what a joke! 😂😂😂😂😂😂

how do you listen to an album in full having the urge to pause it and do something else... thats my issue with liquid swords... i am supposed to albums in one piece because concepts and details and stuff that i would miss if i pause and end up forgetting something....

i had to listen to those first 3 songs fucking 20 times but i haven't heard the other 80 percent so it could be fucking amazing... but im sick of "when the MCs CAME"
I mean, you can't force yourself to like an album. If you've genuinely given it a chance and not enjoyed it, that's one thing. But it's something else entirely when you've made up your mind it sucks before even bothering to listen to it for yourself.

Don’t refer to RateYourMusic ever again then to judge whether you think you’ll like an album, because I just looked, and GZA’s Liquid Swords is ranked #2 top album of 1995 and is in the top 100 albums of all-time in RateYourMusic! An album ranked #2 for 1995 on RateYourMusic is an album you don’t like!

but then if i have to listen to every single album and try it then i will never be able to listen to everything good and i have something mentally wrong with me if i dont like a perfect 10 album (perfect 10 meaning everyone should like it and there should absolutely no urge to skip a single bit of it)

i am lonely (life is so boring i am depressed and need something to think about... and i dont have the time to listen to 40 minute pieces all the time and have to get through so much shit)

Not only that but that top ten really speaks to the demographic that uses the site. In the top ten, there is only one album by a black artist and only 1/2 an album by a woman (Nico counts as part of The Velvet Underground, I guess). And the list is entirely rock except for TPAB.

Awwwww you love music so much, and have such a cool passion at such a young age! I think that’s special and something to be very happy with; it’s priceless! 😊

Loneliness is very common too! Even I’ve been feeling it in the past year, especially as my travel plans all got cancelled and most of my friends are in relationships and I’ve never been in one. But, I feel really good right now fortunately and am much more happy! I’ve come to terms that I can’t travel and go to concerts for a while and am loving food, fitness, this forum, friends, family, vinyl, my blanket and pillow, and I love myself so much too because I’m probably delusional 🤣🤣🤣

You don’t have to listen to all music. I’m gonna end my life without having heard some fantastic music. But if that’s my biggest worry, then life well lived!

You’re looking for validation in the wrong places. I can think of legacy albums I’m not hot on...top of my head: Jeff Buckley Grace or Slint Spiderland. Those are perfect 10 albums in some circles. I like them. But I think they’re overrated. I also don’t lose sleep over it and I embrace subjectivity.

(btw note i dont life half the top 5 of the rym top 10 either.. i fucking hate DSOTM and TVU and nico is overrated because it doesn't feel that shocking or intense in the slightest now, and hell some of the songs on TVU and nico sound like they could have been made in the same time and caused no problem, im waiting for my man just sounds like a standard late 60s song)

It's impossible to listen to every album ever made, music is endless and that's the beauty of it, there's always new music to discover and new sounds to explore. It doesn't matter if a critic gave an album a 10 or a 0, music is music, and music is among the most subjective art forms there is. If someone tries to guilt trip you for not liking a critically praised album, that reflects more poorly on them than you. There's tons of beloved albums and artists I don't enjoy, and if someone tries to shame me into loving the entire Bob Dylan discography, it's not going to work. You can't force yourself to love music based on arbitrary scores and numbers, that's taking so much of the joy out of music.

ok i get it i made a fuck up by mentioning a bad site for judging an album even though i like using it
It’s all what you want to do in the end and how you feel! I don’t use RateYourMusic but skimming through it, I think it looks like a great site for discovering music! But like @gaporter said, it seems to be very biased with what demographic uses it!

However...after just looking, my two favourite hip-hop albums of all time: Madvillainy ⚔ and To Pimp a Butterfly 🦋, are both in the top 20 albums of all-time on RateYourMusic! 😍😂🤷‍♂️🏆🙌🙊

Maybe the users really do know their shit! Just kidding! 😂🙈

There's nothing wrong with looking at reviews and scores by itself, just don't put a lot of weight into them. If you like using the site, then use it, but just because an album has a low RYM rating just means that specific crowd doesn't like it, you might not share the popular opinion; you may listen to it and discover a hidden gem!

i felt shamed for kinda liking john mayer and not liking jack white and his overly retro generic rock.... i have this urge to conform because im so desperate to like everything everyone else likes and thus i have emotional issues

About that...

i love trout mask replica and i listened to it in full without skipping it.... meanwhile i dislike a ton of p4k 10s

Yes! This is so well said! 👏👏👏🎯

Mmmm I can actually see where you’re coming from Dukey! Like, I feel like I do understand your thought processes! 💡

I can’t believe you HATE Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon and The Velvet Underground & Nico though!!! 😶

But back to what @gaporter said, it’s all subjective! I think Bob Dylan’s new album is easily the most overrated album of the year so far!
