Vinyl Me Please Rap & Hip Hop

God damn please be Love King. “FILA” is about as good as it gets.

And what do you know......it’s never been pressed on wax. Totally Love King.

That was only half my point. MBDTF is talked and written about all the time. You'll have a hard time finding a substantial amount of articles or discussions about how a The Dream album is a classic.

None of the albums on the 2010 Def Jam release list really do it for me beyond MBDTF. I would be alright with a few of em but none would be super exciting.

a slight defense of The-Dream:

Also, I am sure some of you are familiar with the Village Voice Pazz & Jops Critics poll which is kinda like MetaCritic before MetaCritic existed. I feel they do a pretty good job of rating albums by importance for any given year. #1 on the list is MBDTF of course but since we know it's not that the next highest rated Def Jam release on this list is...#6 The Son of Chico Dusty. The Roots is at #18. The-Dream is #33 and Teflon Don is #35. Those were the Def Jam releases in the top 50.

The Dream’s album is fine...as an exclusive. I get the Madlib and Badu picks as R/HH, even though I don’t think they should’ve be chosen, they kinda make sense. Love King...no way in hell does that album belong in a R/HH sub, IMO.

I honestly can’t wait for this reveal. Storf has said this is a modern classic that will be as big as Outkast. I can’t imagine what it is given the constraints...

Exactly how I feel! I like Love-King although for me, that album hasn’t aged very well. The-Dream’s Love vs Money has aged well and is still The-Dream’s masterpiece/best album.

I don’t think it will The The Roots’ How I Got Over because of how ridiculously well-known they are and because of how cheap the current pressing of the album is. With Method Man’s Tical and Knxwledge’s Hud Dreems, I understand why they were picked even though they were readily available too. They are lesser known releases artists/releases and weren’t as acclaimed as How I Got Over.

I think it’s going to be Big Boi’s Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty.

I agree that it won’t be The-Dream. I know it hasn’t been pressed before, but not a lot of people would be interested in Love-King. And I just don’t understand it being picked as a ‘Rap & Hip-Hop’ ROTM.

@radiodead - I know you really want it to be The-Dream and it could be it. Who knows? Maybe Storf genuinely thinks it will be as big as OutKast! But I think there’s pretty much no chance it’s Love-King because it’s an R&B album, and it’s not really an R&B that fits in with VMP’s target audience. Also, it’s an album I can’t see being anywhere as popular as southernplayalisticadilakmusic!

Also, someone mentioned VMP’s strong relationship with Big Boi! I also see this Big Boi release being big, especially if they do the original album art. Shutterbugg is a huge hit and still gets played!

Its a company they gonna talk up the product no matter what.
Storf isnt gonna be like oh guys im releasing the shittest album on this date and by this label..sorry.

If its not big boi or kanye its not a classic at all.
So be prepared to be underwhelmed.

He specifically last month mentioned that the pick wouldn’t be as popular as previous months (OutKast, Method Man). He’s not gonna say something is as big as OutKast if it’s just some regular old album. I don’t think there’s an album on the 2010 list that’s comparable to OutKast in most people’s minds. Personally, Pilot Talk would do it for me, but I know that’s a minority view. It’s one of my grails, but I’ve never heard Storf talk much about Spitta.

And that Chico Dusty album is fine. But modern classic? Nah. As big as OutKast? Nah. Kanye fits all categories but it ain’t him. So I’m sure it’ll be an underwhelming “classic”

Yeah, I like Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, but it isn’t a modern classic for me. It’s a diverse, great and punchy record but it’s not a modern classic. I personally feel like Pusha T’s My Name is My Name (MNIMN) is more of a modern classic....even though I wouldn’t call it myself a modern classic. Just that feeling you get with the first track on MNIMN - King Push - makes you feel like you are listening to something grande and lordly. Then you just get hit with one of the best hip-hop tracks of the decade - Numbers On The Boards - straight after King Push.

I just don’t get much of that classic feeling with Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty. Shutterbugg is a classic track, but outside of that, it’s just some average, good and great tracks.

Agreed. I’ve never heard of anyone, outside of this thread, refer to Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty as a classic in any form. It’s just a decent album, at best. There are better albums on the list. How I Got Over is better. It’s just ridiculously easy to attain.

Stop acting like this and explain to us why Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty is in your eyes, a modern classic.

For me, I could understand why so much of us were thinking it was going to be My Name is My Name before as the R&HH ROTM before we got to ‘2010’ hint.

There’s something dark and medieval about My Name is My Name. You listen to the those marching drums on King Push and you are hit with a luxurious, futuristic beat and with ferocious, braggadicious rapping. The medieval feel on MNIMN is continued to Numbers on The Boards and Sweet Serenade. The latter sounds quite mysterious, holy and ethereal yet dense whereas the former sounds like this off-kilter modern beat you would find on Madvillainy. You just have so much strong tracks on MNIMN - I won’t go on because it won’t be MNIMN as the R&HH.

But don’t just say Big Boi’s Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty is a modern classic and act like “haters gonna hate” 🤨😂

Sir Lucious....is a pretty good album but it just hasn’t held up as well. That’s why we have the word “classics”. Big Boi was better received and got more acclaim than Pusha T but for me, Pusha T’s album is aging much better.

It’s like how Britney Spears’ Blackout received very mixed reviews and is now widely regarded as a pop classic whereas an album like Run The Jewels 3 was acclaimed but I bet it won’t hold up as well because there are some fillers and obvious highs and lows. Run The Jewels 2 is much more iconic and sharper album so Run The Jewels 3 won’t age to be a classic, even though it got a high Metacritic.

By the way everyone, I’ll be very happy if it’s Big Boi’s Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty! I can’t wait to spin it and it really does feel overall like an OutKast album! There is something quite special about this Big Boi album and I cannot wait to receive it! 😁♥️

That album is near perfect in my eyes.
The production is on point and the lyrical side of things is highly enjoyable.
Its fun. Its like crack for your ears.

Sir Lucious Left Foot is everything I want an album to be.. best of all elements with a ton of funk.
And it doesnt put my old ass to sleep half way thru

Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty is a very colourful album. I definitely agree with that!

I never imagined you to be older than 30 years old. You sound really young and just your music taste, attitude and avatar made me think you’re like 20 years old, but in a good way!

You’re not an old man. I even thought you were younger than me! You love Aaliyah, right? Well I’m sure you know her classic slow jam “Age Ain’t Nothin’ But a Number”? Always remember that! 😉
