The show is old enough to drink!God Damn, I must be getting old.
I saw Cowboy Bebop and I thought, wow, they are putting out some Danny Gatton? Cool....

I purchased “It Could Happen To You” because I think it’s good for USD$36! It’s a pretty Classics ROTM for me! The pressing details is on par with an Analogue Productions and VMP Classics title! This pressing of It Could Happen To You is AAA, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, 180g and pressed at RTI!Im with you and prefer It Could Happen To You.
I was considering getting the box set for a while, but not overly keen on paying a premium on a couple of the titles. I might end up getting these to be fair, I believe the Prestige series was craft and they are fantastic. Still pricy but the free international shipping makes it comparable (slightly cheaper in some cases) to the standard release. Arghhh decisions!!
Good point. I’d be interested to see how VMP is affected by free international shipping and if it has any relation to the recent price hike. I feel like that can’t be inexpensive for VMP to maintain.
I'm not the esteemed Selaws, but it depends what you like. For me, it's "In New York" by a country mile, since I love Johnny Griffin and I'm not really into vocals. I've listened to the vocal record (It Can Happen To You) a few times over the years but his vocals don't do a ton for me. I prefer the Pacific Jazz era anyway when I'm going vocals for Chester.Im with you and prefer It Could Happen To You.

I think with the colour variant, the album and those pressing details, it’s a no brainer for me at USD$36 + free shipping! I’m really happy with the drop! I’ll now have a Tone Poet pressing ‘Chet Baker Sings’, an audiophile VMP pressing for ‘It Could Happen To You’ - which are both vocal jazz albums - and some Sam Records Chet Baker pressings!
I don't want them any more, send me your damaged, your scratched, your warped masses, yearning to play clean. The wretched refuse of your teeming warehouse...I doubt it. I think the price hike is just to try and get some flat records to @Mather
This is too good Colonel! I’m still pissing myself reading Mather’a post, then seeing this reply!
I really love both of them, I bought the Chet box last year and have spun both quite a good deal, but it depends on what you’re looking for. It Could Happen To You is Chet crooning and being a mid century pop star for the most part (he obviously is playing his trumpet still) but it’s much more of a Chet Baker Sings style album, meanwhile Chet Baker in New York was Chet proving he could keep up with that East Coast Jazz style, so it’s much more Chet a la Hard Bop swinging in a different scene, he’s also in the company of Johnny Griffin and Paul Chambers, it’s a great session but there’s zero singing! I find it to be equally as interesting for that reason and probably reach for both of them equally. I think “Chet“ is my favorite out of the entire boxset though. That one is just incredibly moody.I definitely prefer Chet Baker’s “It Could Happen To You” moreso than his live album “Chet Baker In New York”! Which album do you prefer @Selaws?
Also, I’m so happy these Chet Baker reissues that Craft Recordings did are AAA and mastered at Kevin Gray at Cohearant Audio! And the fact that these two exclusives are 180g and pressed at RTI on top means these will sound superb!!!
Mmmmm interesting that both Johnny Griffin and Paul Chambers both accompanied Chet Baker on the ‘Chet Baker In New York’ sessions! I might pick up that release later, especially as the pressing details are great! The Boxset you have, which are pretty much the same pressing details as the VMP exclusives, sounds great apparently!I really love both of them, I bought the Chet box last year and have spun both quite a good deal, but it depends on what you’re looking for. This is a great point, although I threw my hat in with the 'It Could Happen to You', its really chalk and cheese. For ages, I have told myself that I'm not a fan of vocal jazz, but I have been playing a lot of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Chet Baker Sings lately and actually it's growing on me. Usually I would have said 'In New York' was my preference for the very fact that there are no vocals, but I have found myself humming a lot of Chet Baker Sings and Ella stuff lately so maybe im slowly becoming a bigger vocal jazz fan that I thought (my wallet cries out at the potential new music to discover).I really love both of them, I bought the Chet box last year and have spun both quite a good deal, but it depends on what you’re looking for. Actually, scratch that last part @Ghost ! Ain’t no way ‘Chet’ will be an upcoming Classics ROTM! You can still purchase the album from Craft Recordings and that pressing is AAA, 180g, Kevin Gray and pressed at RTI! Would be a waste if VMP made it a Classics ROTM! Chet is also my favourite out of the three! It is a really moody listen! It’s such a romantic, candle-lit, intimate, dozy album! I actually have a feeling VMP are going to make that album an upcoming Classics Essentials ROTM! I’ve got this crazy feeling they’re going to do it early next year!
At this point...what vmp album don’t you love ?@Selaws - I’m listening to Chet Baker in New York and I love the album! I think I prefer it more than ‘It Could Happen To You’! The drumming on Chet Baker in New York is spectacular, especially on the songs Solar, When Lights Are Low & Soft Winds!
I had to look up who was playing the drums and it’s a man named Philly Joe Jones! I did some research on him and he turns out to be both Miles Davis and Bill Evans favourite drummer of all-time!
Just listen to the last few minutes of the track ‘Soft Winds’ - Philly Joe Jones steals the show! I was blown away by his performance on that track!!!
Tina’d Chet Baker In New York! The colour variant looks gorgeous and the fact that this album was pressed at RTI, Kevin Gray, AAA and 180g made it an easy call! A much, much, much better exclusive than Chet Baker’s Mister B both in terms of pressing details and as an album!

That Craft release is pressed at RTI and is mastered by Kevin Gray!I don't know. It might be because I'm subconsciously trying to put of doing some work but I can only find Chet at the Craft store & that means shipping and import duties. I now want a KG RTI pressed copy of Chet
Shit innit. When VMP does occasionally chuck something out into the store that I actually want then I struggle to really get too pissy about the price. From craft the Chets are about a tenner worth of customs and a fiver worth of delivery more than VMP... Although I'd rather have them in black.I don't know. Future - HonestAt this point...what vmp album don’t you love ?
I’ve kept the stock alert for Cowboy Bepob at 200! If I see the stock count creep below that number, I’ll be keeping a close eye on that exclusive! I’m so glad VMP did an exclusive of that Soundtrack! The colour variant looks amazing too! I just don’t want to spend too much money on vinyl right now as I know next week I’ll be spending a lot on the Herbie Hancock Anthology Boxset!
I am very happy with the three store exclusives that dropped today! Two audiophile pressings of great jazz albums, and a very good looking variant of a classic soundtrack that should sound great on wax!
All three exclusives were expensive ones, but two of them were very high quality releases in terms of its pressing details, and the other already was quite a pricey exclusive! I want VMP to focus more on audiophile pressings in the future, even if it means they’ll be USD$10 more expensive! I rather pay more money if I know the vinyl is going to sound great and is going to get pressed at a plant that produces quality vinyl, especially as it decreases the likelihood of getting a warped record and is less noisy!
