Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

What they've got is North Alabama/ Muscle Shoals power.

Source: am from North Alabama/the Shoals. We love our own
^^^This. @NathanRicaud when you free up some time, please watch the documentary on Muscle Shoals music. When I hear Alabama Shakes, Rolling Stones (Let it Bleed et al), U2 Angel of Harlem, etc., I actually feel that 'Shoals Soul. If you watch the documentary you might get it. Something is in the water there.

Also, St. Paul and the Broken Bones- while from Birmingham, they are part of the Single Lock Records scene (along with recent AMA-er Nicole Atkins) so we just claim them too. They have the sound.

Have you heard the recently released Original Memphis Version of Primal Scream’s Give Out but Don’t Give Up? It’s really really good, The album has the Memphis horns and the muscle shoals rhythm section on it, Tom Dowd produced it and it’s fire. It was always a messy album but this original version is really special!

All this talk about the journey of learning the ways of vinyl have me all misty-eyed.

I started with an LP60 and computer speakers with a milkcrate VMP vinyl and I thought I was a king. Then I started reading more about what I was doing to my records with the LP60 and realized that there was more than just the "aesthetic" of vinyl.

Once I upgraded to the Uturn and started working on a proper amp and passive speakers (after many many hours of research and recommendations from the old forum) I think I finally understand what I wanted to get out of this hobby all along. To sit down after a long day, put on something I may have never heard before, and enjoy the ride knowing that I'm treating my "investment" with as much respect as I can afford.
What’s the LP60 doing to my records? I’m currently saving up for a MoFi UltraDeck but I’m only about 10% of the way there, so it’ll probably be a while. Is it worth upgrading to a U-Turn on my way there? Might be another year before I can get an UltraDeck.

Now I don’t want to play my records lol

I'll let other more knowledgeable people speak to the technical aspects, but the LP60 has a low quality stylus and a relatively high tracking force so there is a risk for more groove wear. That's at least the gist of what I was reading.

afaik it's barely removed from a crosley

I have an lp60 with this on it

Is this anything good?

It’s probably better than what came with it but you can put third party cartridges that would be much better again on them. I think if I remember right that @Lee Newman said something about being able to run a Grado Prestige on them? EDIT: Ignore I’m an idiot, listen to Lee below 😀

The issue is quite rightly as @folsom_lives points out that you can’t set the tracking force so if it’s too high out of the factory it can cause groove wear and inner groove distortion.

You definitely can’t run a grado on it. I believe the upgrade quoted is the best you can do.

Damn. No bueno. I might have to make a pitstop over at team U-Turn before making the long journey over to UltraDeck territory. Not sure I want to do another year of an LP60 laying siege to my friends.

I was on the same boat with a Crosley suitcase turntable back in ‘11... all the records that I bought during that time frame are... and I cannot emphasize this enough... deeessstttrrroooyyed!
I’ve only kept one of the bunch, and that’s my first record bought at a Hot Topic back in the day.
I quickly made the jump to a vintage turntable, which was the most cost efficient thing to do. It was a kenwood turntable. Then moved to a vintage pioneer. Then moved to a Project DC with an ortofon red. Probably best investment I’ve made yet!
