Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

I don't like when you both agree and disagree with me. Though, I agree with the first part but disagree with the second. They did a good job on Australian music at least (Middle Kids, Montero, Gang of Youths, Julia Jacklin).

Agreed on the Aussies, the Julia Jacklin and Charlie Collins were two albums from them I really enjoyed that I wouldn’t have got otherwise. Neither are particularly great pressings though (Jacklin is a super hot pressing lacking dynamics and is from Rainbo and my Collins is a bit crackly).

At least with Blue Note they have chosen mostly albums that haven’t been repressed in awhile and are expensive to find in good condition and aren’t as common of represses. The Blue Notes are some of my favorite albums they have pressed and Art Blakey is the only reason why I re-signed up. Outside of the classics track, VMP has been really poor in curation lately IMO. A lot does seem to me now to be labels sending albums to VMP to press instead of VMP seeking things out.

I’ve been really unimpressed with the classics curation this year. 5 out 12 jazz, 2 of those (Miller and Bobo) really poor albums, only 1 soul album and only 2 blues albums. It’s been a bit of an unbalanced mess imo!

100% this!!! This definitely seems to be the case with the Rap & Hip-Hop track lately with Method Man, The Roots, Slowthai etc

Labels are sending albums to every company who wants to press their records. See Plantasia, it was a record quite impossible to find before. Now you can have "exclusives" from VMP, Bleep, Rough Trade and many different greens from Sacred Bones (Standard Green, Green and White Starbust "Spider Plant", Green Starburst, Green/Yellow "Snake Plant", etc...).

Mmmmmm that’s so true! It’s definitely the case with that 2LP Halloween soundtrack (the one with the very ugly cover)!

This is no curation. This is only business. I won't blame them for that, I find it perfectly normal to press what others are pressing. What I dislike is the fact that they keep calling it exclusives and marketing it as rare. It's not rare anymore when you can have 10 different variants of a record. What is rare today is to have the chance to grab a standard flawless copy on black vinyl and IMO VMP are the worst when it comes to provide flawless records. It's always damaged, warped, poorly pressed, delayed, etc... Since I left VMP I think I only had one and only one warped copy (and 4 Portico Quartet records instead of 4 The Gloaming). How is this possible?

It really is ridiculous. Like VMP’s quality control is lacking so much...🤦‍♂️

Their great customer service makes up for it in my opinion but I’m not sure how much longer that will last....🤷‍♂️

I haven't followed every post in this thread but I remember some people complaining that they were not so flexible when it comes to replacement and they prefer to send credits. It's very nice of them to trade your real money to virtual money that you can only use on their webshop.

Only first 3?😳🤯
I’ll watch them all together eventually. I’m just not a movie person unfortunately. I’ve actually got the box set, but my DVD player isn’t working. Pretty sure I saw all the Harry Potter movies being offered on Netflix though. But I dunno if I’ll watch them anytime soon. I’m so lazy with TV. Like I always say I’ll watch this and that, but never do. I hardly watch TV...

Sorry to detract away from the new store set-up, but I properly listened to the Etta Jones exclusive last night and read the liner notes etc.

The record sounds great, but why on earth did they edit the cover so much? The original pressing has a clear shot of Etta with a subtle peach hue over the photo. The VMP one has a overly darkened and saturated shot of her with the really strong pink hue. This isnt the first time they have done this (Blossom Dearie springs to mind) and it in no way adds to the aesthetic. I just dont get why they would go to all that trouble to make something worse?

They also edited out the photographers signature on the cover, which is properly disrespectful IMO, especially when celebrating the labels anniversary.

Even the DOL pressing from a few years ago used the original image. I know theres the argument that the OJC 2014 pressings used a different colour with darkened image, but even they kept the signature.

We all know original artwork is impossible to reproduce (I don't care if Music Matters says otherwise), so they are forced to to this kinds of edits. It was either that or scanning the ring wear on an OG pressing, your choice.
