Wharfedale Linton 85th Anniversary Review

You found a cool place full of mostly well-meaning eccentrics. Prone to inside jokes and wild tangents. You'll figure out who the "trouble-makers" are soon enough.

As for the Lintons, I think I've had mine for 2 or more years and I've not looked back.
Who you calling a trouble maker?

Putting the Linton aside for a moment, the other speaker I'm considering is Zu Audio's DWX (the truncated New Dirty Weekend). They are priced nearly the same, both large bookshelf boxes, and fairly easy to drive.

My first question is, whether anyone has bought the DWXs or auditioned them, if so what do/did you think of them??? Please share your opinions & thoughts.

Secondly, has anyone dealt with Zu Audio directly - how did that go? Ordering or returning merch?
Thanks for reading.

I actually think the Zus are a lot of fun (a friend has some older Dirty Weekends), but they're going to be a very different listening experience; neutral they are not. There's an appealing coherence to the sound field thanks to the full-range driver, but they don't dig particularly deep and sort of cry out for a subwoofer.

I think for some genres of music they are an appealing and enjoyable speaker, with a lively energy, but the Lintons are likely to be a better all-rounder, even if they don't pop quite as hard.

Zu is great to work with, from what I recall my friend saying. They also offer a 60-day in home trial for cost of return shipping, so you could A-B the two sets of speakers in your own home. If you can float the cash until you decide, that's probably the best option.

addendum: another thing in the Zus' favor is that they look cool as hell.

My buddy just got the DWX and he likes them but his thoughts seemed to align with what @kvetcha Said. He was hoping the bass would be better on them.

A new Yamaha network receiver (R-N1000A-Silver) will be powering the speakers, 2-Channel music, no HT. Do you think a single SVS SB-1000 Pro subwoofer will resolve the DWX's shortcoming issue? I'm sure the DWXs and the silver Yammy will look very cool together! What finish? Walnut or Rustic Hickory?

Oh, an SB-1000 would be plenty. Good sub!

My friend got his in Rustic Hickory, but they look good in pretty much every finish.

Has anyone had a truly poor sub? My experience is that the quality between subs is less variable than main speakers.

Granted, my experience is limited. I have a 15” Definitive Technologies that I got at an estate sale and a $200 Costco 12” Klipsch special. Both seem to do fine in their respective rooms with much more expensive speakers.

I’ve heard subs designed for home theatre that were fun but were maybe a bit boomier than I’d prefer for music but the only truly bad sub I’ve heard was one that came bundled with a soundbar that wasn’t really expensive enough for both products together.

I do love my little REL TZero though, it’s just prefect for me.
