Queen - Radio Ga Ga (EMI, 1984 Test Pressing)

Continuing through Queens studio albums with The Works. Heres a few extra oddities for good measure. Radio Ga Ga was inspired by Roger Taylors son. They were living in France at the time and had the radio on. Taylor young son pointed at the radio and said "radio ka ka" (meaning poo). The drummer thought this was so funny that he changed it to Radio Ga Ga and made a song from it.

The Hammer To Fall 7" is actually incredibly rare. The story goes that EMI released it without clearing it by the band first. Upon seeing the photo of the band playing live (taken by an unofficial Queen photographer) Brian May demanded they be recalled as he didn't want to deceive fans who were expecting a live version of the track. A few of these were sold before they could recall them, and this copy is one of them. I picked this up in a bundle and only paid a few quid.....its worth a lot more than than now! Interestingly a wave of these appeared with a muted yellow text, which were actually bootleggers attempts to cash in on the rarity.

Such a strange record to take the world by storm. I think everybody of a certain age had this CD, it was a great album but it was sooooo different than what was actually moving units at the time and it wasn’t just a one hit wonder type thing either, it had like 4 or 5 singles that charted. It’s just hard to wrap my head around the fact that Aerosmith’s commercial peak was in the 90s and not the 70s/80s and I lived through it. They seemed like such an anachronism.

Right! The memorable music videos probably played a big part in it. Many young people gained a huge crush on Alicia Silverstone at the time.
