Duke Ellington – The Bethlehem Years, Volume II (Bethlehem Records, 1976 Pressing)

Picked this up for cheap a few years back. Theres an interesting story to it as well. The saxophonist Johnny Hodges had left the group and it completely threw Ellington for a while and he struggled to maintain that spark. After a while, Hodges returned and they decided to look back and re-record some of their hits during their time with Bethlehem records, with a fresh approach. Imagine having so many compositions that you could re-record a whole load of them and still make a successful album.

What do you think of the sound quality on this pressing?!? I'm thinking of getting this pressing of Closer before it all sells out!
If it is like the 40th anniversary of Unknown Pleasure, which from what is stated on Discogs was “limited” to 30,000 copies you might not need to rush to pick it up. As far a quality goes, it sounds great. In the comment section again on Discogs people were complaining about noisy presses and skipping but my copy had zero static and played flat. The album has some nice pounding bass too, which I suspect might be what was causing some people’s albums to skip as cheap turntables have a tough time with heavy bass.

tl;dr

It sounds great, you’ll love it.
