What's Spinning

The agutierrezb 2019 record collection challenge

So I've decided to embark on my own personal challenge, which consists of listening every record in my collection before the end of the year. My record collection is not that big -only ~250-, but I still feel like there are a bunch of records I don't give enough attention to, while still adding more titles to my shelves.

For this reason I've set a couple of rules in order to play every record at least once before December 31st: I'll play at least one record a day, going from front to back in the way I have them sorted in my shelf. I can play a different record (i.e. Not the next one in alphabetical order) if I feel like listening to something else in any given moment, but at least one of the records I spin in the day has to be the LP in turn.

I didn't take pictures for the first two days, but I'll try to document the process from here on, so I'll be posting daily on this thread. Wish me luck!
#267: Solange - A Seat At The Table

#268: Star Band de Dakar - ST

This has got to be one of my most spun records of 2020. It is a great album, and t's got a great story too.

According to the booklet included in this Ostinato Records release, Cuban culture was really popular across Africa during the 60's. As a country with a huge African-descendant population that had just gone through a revolution, Cuba was seen as an example of Black liberation in a time where a bunch of African countries were still fighting for their independence. For this reason, Cuban music was really popular in countries like Senegal, were the Star Band blended it with psychedelic electric guitars and singing both in Spanish and their own language.

Give this a listen if you haven't already. It is one of my most precious finds of this year, and the packaging and pressing are very good too.

Paul McGranaghan - La Maleta

So this is my first, errrr, spin(?) of my cousin Paul’s latest album. I posted about it in my profile post earlier but it got drowned out by another release...

I’d really love it if some of you would be willing to give it a sample, I’ll link to the albums bandcamp, the singles soundcloud and a few of his old bits on Spotify!

Tenderlonious - The Piccolo - Tender Plays Tubby (Jazz Detective Records, 2020 First Limited Signed Pressing with Exclusive Art Print)

This is a great album but far too short (clocks in at around 25mins). In fact, in the pic you can see the deadwax for the A-side is almost as much as the actual grooves section. Still, its a great set of music on here and the package is hard to beat. High quality at every stage and this one is signed by Tenderlonious. Also comes with a fantastic art print which I have also displayed for the pic.
