Dizzy Reece & Tubby Hayes - Changing the Jazz at Buckingham Palace (Savoy, 1957 First Mono Pressing)
The next in my Brit Jazz deep dive. This was recorded by the legendary Denis Preston (who ran the Lansdowne recording studio). The story goes that he was struggling to get the players to fully relax and the music was stiff. He then took them all to the pub for a few drinks and by the time they got back to the studio they were all chatting and laughing. He then turned the lights out, the musicians took off their shoes and jackets, and they all played in the dark. The result is pretty impressive, with Tubby Hayes and Dizzy Reece's horns piercing through with lots of power. Really great.
