The Collection Playthrough
The main point of this playthrough was to find things I'd be okay selling but I've been on a big hot streak with some newer pickups that aren't leaving
184 - The Hamilton Mixtape
The main reason for buying this was to add to the Dessa collection as it has her version of Congratulations, a cut track from Hamilton. Honestly though, it's a really good bit of fan service. The Ashanti/Ja Rule collaboration was mind boggling when it happened and is still so today, and some of the other adds really work. It's also easier than digging out the Hamilton boxset if I get an itch, which for $15 from Amazon Warehouse isn't that bad.
185 - Kiss - Destroyer
I begrudgingly put back a super rare Johnnyswim record and a signed Delta Rae at Grimey's due to cost, so this was my "I'm not leaving with nothing prize". My mother is a huge Kiss fan, largely because of the song Beth (her namesake) and when she grew up. It's still a really fun album, even admitting the massive cheese. How men in cat suits became a rock juggarnaut I'll never know..
186 - Willie Dixon - The Chess Box
This is credited to Willie Dixon but plays much more like a Blues compilation of Chess Records. I picked this up from a local mostly because of the cost discrepancy between its value and my recent uptick in Blues interest, and this hits the spot hard. The pressing isn't any hot shakes, and I think the sourcing is digital (and given the Universal fire, there might not be much Willie Dixon outside of that going forward), but three discs for $13 full of some great Chicago blues is nothing to scoff at. The biggest danger is that RSD Kevin Gray Blues boxset is still out there...
187 - Mike Cooley, Jefferson Hood, Jason Isbell -
Live At The Shoals Theatre - June 15, 2014
I nearly paid the full $50 or so for this several times on Bandcamp Fridays or at my local and just never got there. Then the Deep Discount sale popped up and it became a no brainer. Well worth the money, pressed well if a bit quiet, great setlist curation between DBT and earlier Isbell, smart breaks between sides, good looking overall package.
188 - Mike Birbiglia - Thank God For Jokes
It's funny, I have been to probably 10+ shows this year looking for vinyl. Other than the 7" Wilco/S-K, I had come up empty on something that really spoke to me except for this. At a comedy show. What I think happened is that Mike had some damaged copies of his older album that he signed and then discounted. $15 for what is a very strong set of comedy signed is really nice.
189 - Ella Fitzgerald And Louis Armstrong - Porgy & Bess
Another cool find in the local jazz/blues collection. This, I believe, is an original press with the booklet inside with enough info on the original production and soundtrack choices that you could do a darn good high school essay based on it. It's always a real treat when a record comes with this kind of bonus material built in to the overall package. It's had a lot of love over time but still holds up well.
