What's Spinning

Happy birthday Robert Quine.

We owe Robert a debt in at least three ways. He was a fan of The Velvet Underground and an amateur taper (my man) and is responsible for capturing the moment in time that was released as The Velvet Underground - The Quine Tapes box set. Inspired by VU, he became an accomplished guitarist and was a member of Richard Hell & The Voidoids. Later he became a member of Lou Reed's band and played on his best 80's output - The Blue Mask and Live In Italy. He went on to play with a gamut of artists.

Robert's wife died in 2003 and he only made it another 9 months before committing suicide via heroin. An incredibly sad end to an incredibly gifted artist.

A cathartic burner - Robert's in the left channel. Lou's in the right.

RIP Bob. Thanks for everything...

James Brandon Lewis and the Red Lily Quintet - Jesup Wagon

James Brandon Lewis has already been once on my top 10 and truth be told he could have dominated it even more what with his Quartet recording Code of Being (only on CD), his string Quartet with sax (only on YouTube), and a new trio recording with drums and cello (coming next year). I think he'll be soon as one of the jazz greats of this era, and it's been great to see this album top seemingly most best of jazz lists this year. I think there's more to come to him - if you're new I'd recommend checking out An Unruly Manifesto and Live in Willisau especially but everything he does is great.
