A-Z 94 - Blur Parklife

Little jump at the start of Parklife, but I think a clean will fix it. At worst, I have the 20th anniversary pressing I can swap in.

Being the “big” album I’ve always kind of dismissed this, but it’s big for a reason. In my head, this would have been last so far in my run-through, but it’s a lot closer to Leisure than I thought, possibly higher.

The album that I thought Parklife was, in terms of being a bit too Brit-poppy (if that makes sense?). The singles would easily hit a best of, but overall it’s got a slightly smug feel about it. Probably being a bit harsh on it to justify its last place in my ranking.

Yeah that’s exactly my feelings about this. The best of blur’s Britpop stuff has a sort of mixture of a knowing wink and bit of melancholy floating below the surface. On this one the wink did feel like it became a bit of a smug sneer. I do like the singles too, especially The Universal, which is one of their masterpieces.

Today's spins:

Avalon - a PIF from @Turbo (including a nice note!)
Pearl Jam's "No Code" -- a completely immaculate and sealed copy that was $20 from Experience Vinyl because it has "the tiniest bent corner" (that I can't see)
Kid A Mnesia - another generous PIF from @LeSamourai
and sir-not-appearing-in-this-film is the house band at Chez @Mather - Steely Dan's "Aja" -- I had a nice shiny piece o' wax in beat-up "discount great value!" cover and I found an almost perfect gatefold cover (sans record) at a goodwill that I was dropping off old clothes at, this last weekend. The lady tut-tutt'd about how People Are Terrible Why Do They Take The Record And Leave A Mess and since I also made the appropriate shocked Oh You're Right noises, she gave me the cover gratis.
