What's Spinning

Graham Collier Music – Songs For My Father (Fontana, 1970 First Pressing)
Wendell Harrison - Birth Of A Fossil (Rebirth Records, 2022 Vinyl Me Please Exclusive)

2 very different jazz albums to start the day. The Collier is an absolute blinder, really highlighting how important the bassist was to the British jazz scene. The Harrison still needs to grow on me. Its not a bad album but I was expecting that signature Detroit sound but this drifts more towards smooth jazz at times.

Freddie Redd - Straight Ahead! (Interplay, 1977 First Pressing)

Freddie Redd is a fantastic underrated musician in my opinion. His Blue Note albums ("The Music From The Connection", "Shades Of Redd", and "Redd's Blues") are great but he also released some stellar stuff on other labels, such as this one.

Yazz Ahmed - A Shoal Of Souls (IXCHEL, 2019 Limited Pressing)

Im always blown away by Yazz Ahmed's music especially if I haven't heard it in a while. This is a bit of an oddity as it's just a single-sided 45rpm track with the reverse/B-side being etched and printed. It's a good track but was a bit pricey. It was originally listed as 50 copies only but they later retracted and changed to 500 with the first 50 having a signed print.

Just cracked the seal on this bad boy. Spent 21 years sealed, finally giving it it’s maiden voyage.

I must’ve listened to this CD 1,000 times. The vinyl absolutely CRUSHES it. Huge soundstage - Stew Copeland’s kit comes through sounding so big. Really, really impressed with how much of an improvement this one is on wax. Even catching some Trey riffs I’ve never caught on digital.

Edit: also think this should head over to the pif page!

Continuing on my complete album play through - I played through my Cocteau Twins collection the last 2 days while WFH.
Yes I have 2 copies of Blue Bell Knoll (its my favorite of theirs and one of my favorite albums in general) - trying to decide if I want to get rid of the remaster - I prefer the sound of the OG.. I swear i play through both so many times and I can't convince myself to get rid of it.
