Way back in '98 I was far deeper into everything hip hop than middle-aged me can keep up with, and had just acquired my first PC. In my scouring of the internet for all things hip-hop, I caught wind of an up-and-comer from Detroit called Eminem. Thanks to the wonders of RealAudio and a dedicated dial-up line, I was able to listen to The Slim Shady EP, and even figured out how to hook my tape deck up to my computer so I could dub myself a copy to listen offline and share with my hip-hop loving co-workers at HMV (none of my friends was anything more than tangentially interested in hip-hop at the time.) Dr. Dre had signed him by this point, but it was still a waiting game for any material to manifest. Being in Canada there was a plethora of underground material not readily available through mainstream distribution channels, but every shift at HMV I would check our system for anything Eminem was on that we could order. The very first hit to ever come up was this EP, which I immediately ordered. Beyond Em's feature, the whole EP was absolutely incredible and opened up so much more of the underground for me - I picked up a Jizzm album that further deepened my love for DJ Drez (Dr. EZ!) - who I actually stumped when asking about a specific cut in his instrumental intro to the Jizzm album when I met him while working Performer Hospitality at the Victoria Folk Fest my first year living here. I think almost every cut on this made it onto mixtapes I'd make over the next couple of years, but Dr. EZ's Cool Fantastic Parts I and II were absolute staples - especially as bookends or side A/B transitions. Back then I was very active on a site dedicated to cataloguing and trading mixtapes and CDs and Vesuvio of The Anonymous happened to find my mixes riddled with tracks from here and reached out by email to thank me for spreading the love -- a super cool moment for an awkward chubby white kid living in the Canadian suburbs and graduating high school with a bunch of friends not interested in the music!

TL;DR: I really love this EP and have fond memories from it - very stoked to have it now on wax!
