What's Spinning

Uhh, hmmm, I had to check and see if it was the same artist, the stuff I had was more KD Lange-esque Alt Country. This isn’t bad but it’s definitely not that either.

Yeah, they spent some time in Germany and began moving toward a more electronic sound from there. 2008's Superioryouareinferior was kind of the bridge gap album from the country stuff into the electro (and is an essential Canadian album, in my mind!)

Very different sounds at either end of their career thus far, but I'm here for it all. Their first EP from waaaaaaay back is something else altogether - I remember finding a copy at a venue years back and being pretty floored! Rae and I had a good laugh about it when I mentioned it the next time we saw each other.

This album has a particularly heavy bent to it, being the cancer survivor album - it's really been hitting me in the feels. Probably especially since we've been buds for nearly two decades but I haven't seen Rae since shortly before covid and the cancer diagnosis...

This was a fun Beastie Boys side project put together by Ad Rock and the drummer of Suicidal Tendencies and was originally a vinyl only released on the Beastie Boys, Grand Royal label. I just found this copy in my locals “Recent Arrivals” bin when I went to pick up the new Neil Young album.

I stopped listening to whatever the hell I was listening to and am now listening to Simply Mortified and this is fucking fantastic. Will keep my out for a copy of this one!

Yeah, Simply Mortified was the last album ever released on Grand Royal. I loved the CD but haven’t come across a vinyl copy in the US. There have been a few listed for sale on Discogs from Japan but paying $25 for a record and then another $50 for shipping doesn’t appeal to me.

That album has a whole song about Fabio getting hit in the face by a bird while riding a roller coaster. It’s brilliant stuff.

Unfortunately, I was all busy being a single dad and then in a relationship and trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life and missed out on all of this when it happened.
