Stop me if I’ve told this story before but… A neighboring high school hosted The (bloody) Who in 1967 when I was a junior. It was their first US tour and nobody here had really heard of them much at the time. The show was in the school auditorium and I was able to lean on the stage right in front of the band for most of it. The final song was My Generation and it ended pretty much just like it did in this video with Keith’s drum kit blowing up and apart. The bass drumhead, that looked just like the one on the video, blew across the stage and right into my hands. Stunned by what I had just witnessed, I looked at it for a few seconds and didn’t immediately run out a door with it, as I should have. Before I made a move a roadie grabbed it from me and I left empty handed with only a memory of seeing history right in front of me. That is the honest to god truth and The Who has been my favorite band ever since.
