What's Spinning

My collection #117

Emma Dorgu - Roverman

I don't own that much music from Nigeria. Not sure why, I just ended up buying from other West African countries mostly. But what I do have, like this one (and Fela, of course), is great. It's protest music but with funk and even some reggae.

DAY 3 – Something's Gotta Change

John Coltrane - Giant Steps (Original 1960 US Black Label Mono pressing on Atlantic)

I was super close to choosing 'Kind Of Blue' by Miles Davis, but I often feel like 'Giant Steps' by John Coltrane doesn't get the recognition it deserves. With this album, Coltrane literally opened the door to new ways of creating jazz and being able to play the title track has become a rite of passage for saxophonists ever since. It's truly an incredible album.

NOW SPINNING: Coolio - It Takes A Thief

The Dave Brubeck Quartet - The Last Set At Newport (Atlantic, 1972 First Italian Pressing)

I played this last night and its been in my head ever since. Its just incredible and totally unexpected from Brubeck, very different to his studio albums. Hes almost trying to overcompensate for the fact that his acoustic set followed an electric one, so hes bashing the keys to make a percussive sound. Really amazing stuff and Gerry Mulligan's inclusion is a real treat!
