What's Spinning

did you run out of Genesis records ?

Yes, sadly. Until I get the Stiltskin Genesis album to complete the set. I only have a few Peter and Phil solo albums, and a Steve Hackett box set so I could have went there I suppose. Anyway next, Fun House by The Stooges. Might run with the Igster for a while instead.

This is the only album that I had my dad run into the room and shout ‘Turn that awful racket down!!!’ Which is funny because a) it was 25 years old at that time and he thought it was new fangled, young person noise music b) listening to it loud is still the only way to do it. Each track on this was a successful blueprint for another band’s career. It’s a wild ride.

The agutierrezb 2019 record collection challenge

So I've decided to embark on my own personal challenge, which consists of listening every record in my collection before the end of the year. My record collection is not that big -only ~250-, but I still feel like there are a bunch of records I don't give enough attention to, while still adding more titles to my shelves.

For this reason I've set a couple of rules in order to play every record at least once before December 31st: I'll play at least one record a day, going from front to back in the way I have them sorted in my shelf. I can play a different record (i.e. Not the next one in alphabetical order) if I feel like listening to something else in any given moment, but at least one of the records I spin in the day has to be the LP in turn.

I didn't take pictures for the first two days, but I'll try to document the process from here on, so I'll be posting daily on this thread. Wish me luck!

#185: Charles Mingus - Blues & Roots

#186: Charles Mingus - Mingus at Antibes

IMO this record is one of the best representations of the blend of tradition and innovation that defined Mingus's career. Some moments here sound really "out there" (specially Eric Dolphy), but they somehow sound totally indebted to the African American tradition. I wish I had the 2XLP verion of this, because there is a lot going on here to me pressed into 2 sides only.

Rounding off the classic original Stooges - Raw Power, with the Bowie and Iggy mixes. The Bowie one has grown on me although I still like the Iggy one for some bone shaking. This album is also The Stooges album I return to most, it might be their most straightforward but it rocks. So much attitude and sex and fun and swagger. You can’t beat it!
