The Official Needles and Grooves 1001 Album Generator Project (aka Preachin’ about the Preachers if today’s selection sucks)

Who would be an example of bands that were trying to sound like Big Star. I didn't get any sense of one album of any obvious "oh yeah, this sounds a lot like...."
The Replacements recorded Please To Meet Me (and the song “Alex Chilton”) in Memphis primarily due to Paul Westerberg’s love of the band.

I am sure this is correct but personally I would rather listen to Fountains Of Wayne, The Posies, or Redd Kross than Big Star. I enjoy Big Star but they aren’t my favorite.

I think Teenage Fanclub and The Posies are 2 of the most obvious children of Big Star
I almost included Teenage Fanclub but I always thought they were a bit more crunchy sounding and the through line wasn’t as obvious as some of those others. TF was certainly heavily influenced by Big Star though and another band that I enjoy more than Big Star themselves.

I’ve never heard of The High Llamas but now that I have… 🤿
Bro, Drag City just reissued their back catalogue on wax. You should check out Hawaii at the very least heavily influenced by Pet Sounds but refracted through the lens of Stereolab if that makes sense at all.

That makes sense, Sean O’Hagan was in Stereolab as a keyboardist for a time.

The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones (England's Newest Hit Maker... | AllMusic *

*stupid fucking yanks. The British version is the one in the book. British starts with Route 66 and includes I Need You Baby. US version inserts Not Fade Away as song 1 and omits I Need You Baby.

I love the Stones but my guess is there are probably approximately 327 Rolling Stones on this list and this would be one that they coulda replaced with something else. It’s not a bad album but not an essential album either.
