  • My, um, replacement order of that "Dead Man's Pop" collection arrived today, and this time it's not an acrylic box. Yay! Actually, I think they did a terrific job with the production of the packaging for this box set. And the liner notes are very informative too. Been a pretty shit week, so this is a much needed distraction.
My sister gave me some Amazon credit last week for my birthday. I ended up ordering The Replacements' "Dead Man's Pop" box set. My order arrived today, but instead of a 4 CD/1 LP box set, Amazon sent me a medium size clear plastic box like you would get from The Container Store. Happy Birthday?
Busting out some old music doc DVDs this weekend to help pass the time. Last night was the Joy Division doc since it was the anniversary of Ian's passing. Tonight, it's "NewOrder Story". Man, I forgot how different the format of this doc is. The Sex Pistols doc, "The Filth and the Fury" is in the on deck circle.

All good ones. If you haven't watched them in a while (I'm assuming you have, being a man of wealth and taste) you can never go wrong with Dig, You See Me Laughing, Tell Me Do You Miss Me and Last Days Here.

I love Dig. That is on the list to watch. I haven't watched "The Filth and the Fury" in a long time. That moment where Johnny Rotten breaks down talking about Sid, albeit in silhouette, is such a rare moment of his breaking character. Who are the others that you mentioned on?

Digging the Eno-esque guitar sound on this new Phoebe Bridgers song.

They guitars remind me of some of the little bursts of distortion that pop up on certain Eno songs, like 'Here Come The Warm Jets' or 'St. Elmos Fire'. Nice little accent.

Well either way it's a good song

Yeah it is, that is even a highlight for me on the likes of the official session releases like the one The White Stripes released a few years back. Brings me back to being huddled next to the radio listening to them as a teenager well after my bedtime!

Years back somebody uploaded a bunch of full Peel Show episodes to a site that quickly was taken down. I managed to snag a few of them for my iTunes account. I got a New Order special, a Bob Marley episode, a Roy Orbison tribute episode, and a few others. They're really cool to listen to. Just not the kind of radio programs we have here. And Peel's taste was so good.

Growing up in the UK we were hugely lucky with the BBC. The lack of commercial constraints on their programming meant that there was a space able to be carved for someone like John Peel on the biggest music channel in the country. To be fair in the 90’s there were other taste making DJ’s on that station who did similar things with other genres. He was, and likely will remain, the most enduring and the best.

Got a notice yesterday that the Sharon Van Etten show that was supposed to take place last month was officially cancelled. They were holding out to see about possible rescheduling I guess. Not surprised, but it's still disappointing. Sounds like a lot of Summer/early Fall tours were scrapped completely this week.
I don't really need all of these scammy job "opportunities" flooding my inbox this week. The situation is rotten enough without having to figure out what is legit and what isn't.

I HATE this. The worst are mom groups and all of their "work from home and make bank" pyramid schemes or straight up scams.

I've had different levels of it. It gets difficult when you submit for jobs through LinkedIn, and you wind up sending to a staffing/recruiting agency. I wound up on a cattle call Zoom deal this morning and there were like 100 people on there. Then I've got a company emailing saying I submitted for something I know I didn't because it is WAY above my experience level.
Listening to "No Pocky For Kitty" earlier this evening while driving around, and, I feel more and more that Superchunk are one of America's great rock bands. They're so consistent with the quality of their recordings. Kind of like Spoon in that regard.
Just took my longest outing by car in a few months. Quick takeaway...nobody seems to remember how to drive anymore. Let's be honest, it wasn't great before the pandemic, but now...yikes!
Today was a pretty shit day until we got a bluesy new tune and new album announcement from Dylan, and a torchy new jazz song St. Vincent did for a new Netflix series. This track is about as far away from "Masseduction" as she could go.
Watching this Natalie Wood documentary on HBO. Great actress, and a timeless beauty.

Would you recommend? I keep being wishy washy on whether I want to watch this.

I enjoyed it. It's a one sided deal though since here daughter is the main voice of the project. Her interview with her father Robert Wagner is not in any way hard hitting. She's throwing him softballs, actually. It was cool learning more about Natalie though, and all of the old footage is great.

After years of dodging requests from people on Facebook, I've finally decided to do the "post 10 album covers without explanation" challenge bit. But I'm not challenging anyone else. And I'm totally providing context and explanations for each pick. So...I guess I'm not really doing doing the challenge bit at all.

Since I'm doing write-ups, I'm going to keep it to 10. But...I'll probably at least list out a few honorable mentions to cover those that just missed the cut.

Here's my list: 1) New Order - "Substance"; 2) Bob Dylan - "The Bootleg Series, Vol. 1-3"; 3) The Clash - "London Calling"; 4) Doug Sahm - "The Best of Doug Sahm & The Sir Douglas Quintet 1968-1975"; 5) VU - "VU & Nico"; 6) PJ Harvey - "Dry"; 7) Miles Davis - "In A Silent Way"; 8) The Staple Singers - "Uncloudy Day: Gospel Greats"; 9) Los Lobos - "Kiko"; 10) Neko Case - "Blacklisted".
I shouldn't be spending the money given my own situation, but, I did opt to make some Bandcamp purchases today to support local Austin acts. Picked up Blushing's digitial discography, and a special COVID collection from Tortuga Shades. Probably also order a Moving Panoramas digital album just to support 'em.
