The Official Needles and Grooves 1001 Album Generator Project (aka Preachin’ about the Preachers if today’s selection sucks)

lol your least was my fave. THIS IS HOW YOU FEEL @Rip_City ??? Lol
The Angry Bird's 8/10 is absolutely an evaluation I agree with. I evaluated it as a 4/5 yesterday, which is empirically the same. I like "Writer in the Dark," but I see why it might not be someone's favorite from Melodrama.

Anyways, I'm about to lose my hearing at this Boris show in ~20min.

EDIT: spelling

I gave it a four out of five, here’s what I wrote:

This was a strong personal pop album framed very well. Antonoff’s great production is clearly felt but his tropes do weaken the album at times. The last half is the strongest. It is a worthwhile album.

Need to get off my ass and go grab the book. I hope this isn’t on the list over Control or Velvet Rope. I remember listening to this not too terribly long ago and thinking that it had not aged particularly well.
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis production is epically late 80s/early 90s. I dig it because it’s so of it’s era. But it definitely not as timeless as some of her other work

Rhythm Nation was her breakthrough where she was her own thing and no longer just Micheal’s baby sister.

Also, I would put Janet the list too.

Yeah, Janet is just below those other two for me. I get that this was the album that made her a force. I like Jam and Lewis, but this album is just a little much (as I recall, and hell I’m pretty sure I was still working and therefore probably just pissed off so it may have just been a bad time). I’m gonna try to give it a fair shake. I remember being a little disappointed because I liked (and still do) the singles, it was the rest of the album that just felt less.

As for the book, this is it. 🙄

How many Michael Jackson albums are on the list?

Off The Wall, Thriller, and Bad I would assume?

Any Jackson 5 records?

lol, no Jackson 5. I don’t know that I’ve ever listened to an album by then that wasn’t the Christmas one. Never had anything that wasn’t a comp.

Yes those three. I have no problem with that but (hot take) I think Dangerous is his best album.

I have MJ’s disco from Off the Wall through Xscape on CD.

Jackson 5 greatest hits is like The Monkees greatest hits just full of bangers but I they didn’t even pretend to be an album band.

Dangerous is alright. Maybe it’s more consistent throughout than Bad? But it doesn’t have nearly the highs as the albums that preceded it. Thriller and Off The Wall are nearly flawless though.

10/3/24

damn this has been such a stacked week so far . Is this Janet’s only album in that book?

10/2/24

I’ve only listened to those 3 from him but god damn that’s a legendary 3 album run, you could rank any of them in any order and I wouldn’t be able to disagree (even though I do think Bad is the easy weakest as a whole, his run of singles on it are incredible so I won’t argue). Probably should explore further at some point.

First full listen of Rhythm Nation for me, and my second Janet after Control. I did know and enjoy 2 of the singles from this but I’ve never taken the dive into any of her post Control albums because of the lengths of these things. Control is so tight and front to back all killer no filler, and then I see the track lists of her other albums and I’m discouraged by the 20 tracks with interludes all over the place. Not every song needs an interlude after it Janet
