Upcoming/Recent Shows

Jon & Roy are a much beloved local duo that have been putting on a big holiday show around here for over 15 years now. My wife has wanted to go to one with me since we got together, but between covid and kids it hasn't happened. But I'm picking up tickets tomorrow for this year's show.

...I am excited as hell to see Anna Tivel!!

Members Only radio show last night with Soul Asylum, acoustic. I'll be honest, I was too young for Soul Asylum's peak so they'll always be kind of a one hit wonder for me, but the members I talked to over 40 all LOVED this band. Like, rabidly.

The venue was House Three Thirty, which was a beloved club called Tangiers back before I moved here. Now it's owned and operated by LeBron James's foundation, who do a ton of great work in Akron. Spotlessly clean and run like a well oiled machine. Their cabaret theater was packed and practically overfull for the show.

The band has a new record out, which they played the lead single before being interviewed by the station's Program Director, a fellow native Minnesotan like the band. Dave Pirner was a bit...grumpy isn't the word, but I think he would have rather have had his off day instead of playing for us. Oh well. After the interview, we got the hits, and everyone left happy. Dave's vocals are a bit scratchier now. Was gonna pick up the new record to get signed, but the band retreated to their bus pretty quickly and I couldn't stick around to wait.

Happy to see her get more listeners. Surprised she has just over 12k followers on IG.

I see you lurking here @Tyr; you were the first N&G member I introduced A.A. Williams to during a random late night JQBX session ~3.5 years ago 📻
Yes you did!!! And I’ve loved them ever since. Thank you buuuudddddy.

In fact, I’m using their track ‘Exit in Darkness’ for my next performance…in Germany!

Last night, my wife and I went to see Andre 3000's new jazz project in Akron. We thought our town was such an odd booking in his tour itinerary, which was mostly major cities. Unfortunately, our theater was maybe half full.

I knew what we were in for having listened to the record and watched his TV performances, but the wife had no clue other than me warning her it wasn't going to be "Hey Ya".

It was definitely one of the most interesting shows of the year. Andre and the 3 other musicians on stage only took 3 song breaks the entire show. Many movements throughout and very percussion heavy, much more percussion heavy than I remember from the record. Which makes sense since he stated during one of the breaks that it was all improvised.

In complete honesty, I'm glad I went and experienced it, but I have zero desire to see it again. There were moments of transcendence, where I found myself staring up at the star lights that are featured on the ceiling of the theater, contemplating my existence and place in the universe. There were other moments where the droning on and on was too much even for me.

Unfortunately we missed serpentwithfeet opening the show as our dinner ran long.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard ~ Rady Shell San Diego, 11/2/2024

Acoustic show from KGLW, and cold & rainy, which didn't slow them down at all. Got three of their Synth songs in an acoustic arrangment, and some solid metal ones as well. Way less chill than I thought it would be, lots of excellent jams. Highlights were Magma (which had a Panda bodysurfing in the audience), Witchcraft --> Chang'e to start it out, and a gorgeous The River to end the night.

I saw Jane’s Addiction there. Sound was very bass heavy but that could have been their issue and not the venue. Nice venue. If you want to save money, don’t drink there.
I read some reports from their shows there this weekend and opted for balcony center, hoping the sound is good there. Will definitely pregame elsewhere!

Update: Due to a StubHub fuckup, in which they sold me 2 seats, one of which DID NOT EXIST, and we didn't have tix by the time we got there, and the door guy let us in anyway, we were refunded the full amount today, so we saw the show for free.

I also called StubHub on the way and they said the tix would be ready for me when I got to the venue, to give it an hour.

In the future, I'll use them, but will also verify the seats actually exist! It was Loge 5, Row K, seats 5 & 6 - the row ended at 5.

What a bummer. I've never had any issues buying from StubHub. Glad the door guy took care of you. That said, where did you sit? Hopefully didn't have to share a seat!

Funny thing is we bought tix for our daughter & her husband as a gift. They were going themselves but last minute change had me driving us all down. I bought seats Thursday morning and they ended up being one row back from them.

The usher moved us down into 2 seats that didn’t seem to be sold or occupied, so we lucked out and sat with them!

I’m sure (?) it was a fluke, I will be more careful in the future.
