Upcoming/Recent Shows

Cross post from the Grateful Dead thread.

Wow, that was an experience.

The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra started with a Dead inspired Overture to get the crowd ready for what was to come.

Bobby and the rest of the Wolf Bros + Wolf Pack strutted onto the stage and proceeded into a great opening Jack Straw.

A surprise Lost Sailor > Saints of Circumstance followed, the latter of which sounded especially great supplemented by the orchestra.

Dark Star and Truckin' rounded off the first set.

Shakedown Street had everyone dancing to start the second set. Playing in the Band followed, which felt especially poignant given the large group of musicians that were literally playing in the band. Playing transitioned into Uncle John's Band, which had one of the longer jams of the evening, but the orchestra-featured jam for The Other One was something to behold. So great.

The highlight for the whole show may have been what was sandwiched into the middle of the second set - a mood shifting and absolutely devastating Days Between. I mean, come ON, Bobby. Truly one of the peak magical dead moments that you seek amidst a night of other magical moments which just don't compare. Yes, Bobby fucked it up at one point, as he did with a few of the other songs during the course of the evening, but that didn't take away from the emotional bomb that went off in the room. Even the Spinners halted their twirling to watch in awe.

After Days, there were reprises of Dark Star, Uncle John's Band, and Playing to close out the evening. Not the longest set - it started at 7:30 and ended at 10:10 with a 20 minute intermission between sets, but I left with my cup full and that's all I could ever ask.

The return of Will Hoge to the station today. I've seen him twice here, but I guess he's been coming more times than that prior to me moving here. Acoustic duo on this tour with Jon Tyler Wiley, who was given 2 songs of his own solo prior to Will coming on stage. Lovely songwriter.

Oh wow, how was Lime Garden? I love their album. Did they tour the states, or you were in UK/Europe and saw them? I totally missed it the memo if they came stateside.

I would highly recommend catching Lime Garden live should the opportunity ever arise. Their US tour was only five cities (New York, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, and Seattle), so it's understandable to have missed those announcements, especially since they'd probably be buried by "the algorithm" on social media. Even the Brooklyn show wasn't a sold out, which was kind of disappointing.

Got a chance to go to the Boca Blues festival this weekend with my Dad. It was a great time, with everything from blues rock, Chicago blues, to delta blues. Samantha Fish tore it down to close the weekend, and my ears are still ringing.

Ally Venable opened the festival and was fantastic, more to the rock side of blues.
She told me I looked like a guitar player, not sure if that is good or bad lol, but I am going to take it as a sign that I should start to learn how to play...always wanted to.

Mud Morganfield, son of Muddy Waters was the absolute highlight of the weekend for me.
He played a couple of Muddy songs and he sounds eerily like his dad. It was a real treat to just hear true old school Chicago blues. Nothing like it.
When I got to the merch table he told me he needed to stand up and shake my hand since he doesn't see many younger folks at his shows, so he was happy to hear of my love for the blues.
Absolutely go check him out if you can

Vanessa Collier was also phenomenal. Such a unique style as she goes from singing(powerhouse of a voice) to playing Sax, to guitar and absolutely killed it. Probably got the biggest ovations from the crowd as well.

Had an enjoyable night seeing The Lemon Twigs last Thursday, also posted by @Matt M above. Went with a friend that paid for my admission.

The Umbrellas

Bay Area jangle pop/power pop band with ample noisy, twee energy. Drummer seemed a little unhinged for this genre of music.
Enjoyable overall.

The Lemon Twigs

They played songs spanning their discography, but with an emphasis on new LP A Dream Is All We Know. Had a good time, as their tunes were all well performed with jubilant energy.

Their main set went for just over an hour, of which I was not able to see the majority of the stage and performers due to being seated behind a tall gentleman. By the time the encore of three songs begun, my friend and I stood up for the rest and got a pair of photos in.

Chatted for a bit with my friend in the bar area, waiting in the merch line initially as he wanted a copy of the new LP and perhaps a tote bag. Unfortunately the new LP sold out at some point in the merch line, and my friend had second thoughts and declined getting a tote. We chatted for ~10min more and then headed back to our cars to call it a night.
Well, for him anyway. I got back to my car and headed down to the Holocene just under 10min away...

I got back to my car and headed down to the Holocene just under 10min away...
...and arrived there just before 11:00 AM. I had a double concert night, the first time I've ever attempted this in the past six years of being a solo concert attendee. Peruvian producer/DJ Sofia Kourtesis was performing a DJ set late in Portland, someone I have wanted to see since I listened to her spectacular debut record Madres from last year.
The event had already begun at 9:00 PM and would last until closing time at 1:30 AM. I learned as I questioned the employees at the door for ID check that I wasn't late for the headliner. She was just about ready to perform her set; she had to catch three flights to get to Portland though and was likely exhausted. I went in with the understanding that having my copy of Madres be signed might be a longshot.

Anish Kumar

Anish was the second artist on this list as part of a double bill, and must have been DJing for close to two hours already. Fun deep house selections.

With ~25min into the set and having relocated to the main stage floor, I saw Sofia somewhat hidden on the stairs separating the floor and DJ booth, out of sight from most of the crowd in preparation. I pulled out my LP jacket of Madres out from my bag, and asked her to sign it after getting her attention. She was more than happy to and seemed really excited with me asking. After asking for my name and taking my silver Sharpie, she opened the gatefold and wrote a message on the four indented lines in the gatefold presumably in Spanish, with me using my phone light to aid in writing. She handed my items back to me and gave me a hug without me even asking. I thanked her and mentioned that I was very excited to see her perform momentarily.

Kumar performed for about ~40min in the time I arrived in total before Sofia took control of the decks.

Sofia Kourtesis

She wasted no time getting ready, initiating her set with the second track on Madres (but the first song on the LP tracklist!) "Si Te Portas Bonito." Electric energy from the crowd, even if the video doesn't totally sell it from my perspective:

Her set lasted for just over two hours. In total, she performed three songs from Madres, a few from her EPs, and several cuts in the deep house realm, including a cut from the new Caribou record! Nice timing as I couldn't see Caribou this year due to work schedule conflict.

She didn't shy away from some familiar house remixes, either!

She killed it. Even though the BPM of the set remained roughly static, the energy never relented with plenty of switchups to keep the audience hyped. No merch, as expected for a DJ event.

Post show

Stayed to the 1:30 AM closing time, even though I had work later that day. A few of us and I wanted to chat with Sofia before security kicked us out at ~1:45 AM after the venue lights came back on. A pair of concertgoers handed over CDs for her to sign. She was a sweetheart and was interested in everything we wanted to ask. She was also deeply concerned about us when she brought up an implication about the results of the USA election, hoping that we would all be safe from what's to come. All of those talking to her, including me, responded by saying that the work begins now and that we will do what we can in our power to help not only the vulnerable, but also each other. On this night, all of us concertgoers agreed that we needed her music and fervor tonight as our escapism from the grim reality.

A few people requested some photos with Sofia. As I pulled out my phone to request the same, she immediately threw her arms around me without her or I saying a word 🥺 I thanked her again for the absolutely amazing night and wished for her quick return to Portland 🤗

Absolutely zero traffic getting home, and I couldn't wait to check out Sofia's signed message in the gatefold.
The inside:

My dear Markus
I love you so much
thank you for your support
I love you a lot
love and hope
Sofia <3

If that is truly accurate then...um...🥺

One of top5 favorite shows this year. Easily. Deep house is hitting harder for me as an amateur DJ and feels more like home the older I get. Madres was one of my top10 last year and it still is now, reflecting one year later.

P.S.: I've added Sofia's EPs to my wantlist, Santa! They are absolutely excellent and would be infinitely useful in a DJ set.

One of my bucket list shows finally becoming a reality

Just saw them in Philly last week. 3rd time seeing them since reunion, and this concert was just incredible. They developed these mind-melting visuals to complement their already mind-melting music. Truly amazing. I'm actually thinking about going to the MassMOCA to start my '25 concert season on the right foot. Enjoy!

Never seen before but mbv is probably my number one bucket list show and slowdive are somewhere up there too. Shoegaze was like…THE genre for me in adolescence and to get to see an icon of the game is just the best. Hoping I can get a poster

Cyndi Lauper / Daya ~ San Diego Viejas Arena 11/20/24

Caught the Cyndi Lauper farewell tour last night. Venue was about 2/3 full, we bought cheap seats and snuck our way down to the unsold fancy seats for a great view.

Really enjoyable show, hadn't seen Cyndi before but she is certainly a presence. Way more artistic of a show than I would have expected, and her between song banter was just as good as the songs. Given her longtime support for womens rights and LGBTQ+ rights much of the dialog revolved around that, which was certainly appreciated. She'd be great to do a speaking tour. Voice is strong, and at 71 she still puts on a physical show with lots of costume and wig changes. Well worth the price of admission.

And for those wondering, Goonies R Good Enough got played, with shoutouts to a lot of the classic wrestling folks who appeared in it - Captain Lou Albano, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Iron Sheik.

Daya opened, who I was unfamiliar with, but enjoyed the deep bass and beats in her songs, her drummer in particular was a complete badass.

Tonight was my local station's Thankful Thanksgiving show at The Kent Stage near Kent State University featuring Fruition and Southern Avenue.

Being mildly familiar with both bands, I was bummed I was going to miss the show as we were going to be out of town. But, something for work popped up for my wife taking place tomorrow, so we had to stay in town and I was able to attend the show.

Fruition was absolutely lovely. Performing as an acoustic trio instead of their usual 5 piece set up. Harmonies, YES.

Headlining the night was Southern Avenue. I was due to see them twice this summer, once with Willie Nelson and another at an in studio at the station. I missed both, so I was looking forward to getting my "third time's the charm" moment with them. This is also only a few weeks since their bassist was tragically shot and killed in Memphis. When it happened I asked the station's Program Director whether the show would even still go on and he had already been contacted by their manager saying they were going to soldier on because that's what he would have wanted. Brutal. I was expecting them to mention it at some point during their set, but they didn't. All of that aside, they were sooooo much fun. Can't imagine being so positive and upbeat with everything that's happened and I'm sure they're all still in mourning, but they radiated positivity all evening.

A friend in San Diego went the other night. He said the same about it not being sold out, (they had purchased cheap seats in the rafters) but ended up 7 rows off the floor.
