Movies

Honestly don't know what to do with the information that I, someone whose film intake is approximately 90% horror films and superhero movies, apparently puts more effort into this shit than some actual registered Oscar voters.

I adore both of the films. Easily my favorite major blockbusters of the decade and my favorite Sci Fi since Blade Runner 2049. Would take them over the OG Star Wars trilogy if the third one maintains the quality of the first two.

It's a joke that voters wouldn't watch it. And it's a joke that DV wasn't nominated.

That said, glad Anora won tonight considering I knew Nickle Boys had 0 chance. Wish Nickle Boys had gotten adapted screen play and Demi best actress. Otherwise everything went as I would have voted.

Haven't watched I'm Still Here or Complete Unknown though.

The Oscars are as imperfect as any other awards body, but man do I enjoy following them. The small, weird and important stuff getting recognition makes up for the inevitable bad stuff, and since the academy expanded like 6 or 7 years ago they've been getting it right more than not. The 2020s are on a fantastic best picture run.

With Conan hosting, the return of acting clips, and several categories up in the air, this should be a really fun one.

Except for Coda which is mid af and basically a Hallmark movie with a slightly higher budget.

I would have been happy with any of Power of the Dog, Dune I (but first films in a trilogy never get it) or Liquorice Pizza. People love Drive My Car but it was too long for me.

And actually, Nomadland was alright but had no real bite. That was a weird year though for obvious reasons. Think I was rooting for Minari.

But either way, we are on a great 3 year run now + Parasite in 2019.

Ah missed that too. I figured there was something there when he was doing his over the top sarcastic kinda voice
Neither Conan or Sandler are overtly political in their comedy most of what they do is more absurdist than anything. I think the Sandler bit was more just a joke about Sandler’s “comfy dad” aesthetic than trying to run a jab at the Trump/Zelensky meeting. Sandler embracing Chalamet which resulted in the light blue hoodie atop his butter yellow suit (making visual allusions to the Ukrainian Flag) also seemed more like pleasant coincident. That was more of a reference to Nikki Glaziers Sandler/Chalamet joke from the Golden Globes than anything else. I doubt Sandler knew what Timmy was wearing or vice versa. It was also such a fleeting moment that only the most conspiratorial would find a hidden message in something that sly meaning if it were a shoutout/joke it would have been lost on the vast majority making the statement much too clever and thus largely ineffective.

Here’s the two bits run back-to-back for reference.

Conan did get directly political when he made a joke about audiences being happy to see a film character stand up to a powerful Russian. I'm glad any political references were mostly indirect though, no reason to spell it out anymore.

Yup and that was a direct, and very funny joke. Nothing cryptic about that one.

Also, if you don’t count the Sandler piece I think it was the only political joke he made all night long.

Has anyone seen Emilia Perez?
It’s rated 5.4 on IMDB. I’ve heard nothing but backlash and it had a ton of nominations.
I don’t recall Gamora or the singing lady mentioning the trans community in their acceptance speeches(could be wrong about Gamora). Personally have no intention on seeing it.

I watched ~2/3 of it while making turnovers Saturday night. It's, uh, not very good. Takes a lot of big swings which deserve some love and credit, however I'd point to Annette as a musical which takes similar swings which actually connect.

I don't know if I'd call it flat-out offensive so much as it's deeply incurious about the topics it broaches; the impression of Mexico seems to be "cleaning ladies and drug trafficking," the trans experience isn't approached much further than being in this case a sublimation of the desire to change. On a basic level the characters are really thin; Emilia, as I said before, barely has any depth. The lawyer Zoe Saldana plays is also barely a person; she has some inner conflict about being recognized as a good lawyer, and wanting to fight the evil in this world: which makes it utterly confusing why she enters the employ of a drug trafficker (there's some spoken-aloud overture towards wanting to support a moral transformation, but it's barely a part of the text).

It's simultaneously clawing at your pant leg for attention, and doing nothing with it.

Likely won’t see it, but it seems to be getting reviewed-bombed due to a PR nightmare leading up to the awards. I imagine it would be a bit higher if not for that, given 72% of critics reviewed it positively.

Neither of the winners mentioning the trans community tracks with the movie's handling and treatment of the subject.
