Record Store Day 2025

Yeah. Fucking hip-hop has a hard on for overcharging and keeping releases limited in recent years. See the fact that all of Billy Woods albums can only be purchased on tour (for $50) or that JPEG's albums dip in and out of print and are priced at like 40$. It's why that part of my collection has stalled.

But Cunninlynguists probably need the $ and that album was a STAPLE of my college years. I actually started buying wax after seeing APOS and Strange Journey volume III at their merch table during a 2014 tour. Bought them on the spot (for $25) and they remain among the most valuable records in my collection because they've never (to my knowledge) been repressed.

So we will see what happens. I just found a shop out here that is going to have it-- but they specialize in hip-hop so I bet it's one of the few places where that album is gonna be in high demand.
Billy Woods stuff has gotten more easily accessible. Hiding Places is up here woods + segal - Hiding Places [VINYL RE-ISSUE]
And his new one: billy woods - GOLLIWOG [2xLP VINYL]

I got that APOS back in 2014 as well, love that album.

I follow Kno on social media and he's adamant that they only do pressings if it's gonna benefit the small guy. Like they just released their EP through a small coffee shop in NC (I think), so he's a good dude obviously that isn't trying to sell out anytime soon.

Thank you for that link to Billy. Birthday is coming up and I will be ordering. I was so annoyed with the $50 asking price at his show.

I'm finally about to break down and buy Cornballs. He has been charging $40-45 for the re-issue (OG went for $20 in 2019 but I was on a hiatus from collecting). Unfortunately, to do so, I have to go through Amazon. Because none of my local shops have the option to order it for some reason.

I believe one of my locals has a sealed copy sub $40. I can check tonight for you if you'd like.

Let me know?

I was in LA for work, swung by Amoeba and they were charging like 43? And they are usually very fair in their pricing. Amazon currently has it on "sale" for $37. Based off some Discogs digging, I think he re-issued it as a 2LP for $30 last year, it sold out quick and they realized they could bump the price. So now it's $40 for a single LP.

Unfortunately, it's one of my favorite rap albums of all-time so I think I'm just gonna suck it up.

Billy Woods literally just dropped a preorder for his new 2xLP this morning. He's always released his stuff online.

Feel like that's a recent change. Because at the show he straight up said "yes the album is 50$ but it can only be purchased here and I figure out pressing them so all of the proceeds go to me".

That was 3 years ago though.

It's not a recent change at all. I've been buying all of his albums off Backwoodz for years. It's his label, so he gets the proceeds anyway. If you tried to buy one of the couple albums like the Armand Hammer WHT LBL which they did a small run of and only had at a handful of shows that's completely different, but I have a decent collection of Billy Woods and Armand Hammer releases and they weren't purchased at shows.

The hip hop thread would tell you the same thing.

WHT LBL did come out 3 years ago. If that's what you're referring to, you should have bought it

It was the tour for Aehtiopes. And I believe you, but that's definitely not what was said at the show. What was said at the show was "it's 50$ because it's only available on tour / I get everything pressed myself". Of note, Reckless Records (Chicago's Amoeba but with better prices) told me they have been trying to order the Hiding Places repress since December but haven't received anything. So his shop is definitely still gatekeeping too.

Everything I just typed feels a touch dirty to me, but in spite of that...

I just put in a irresponsible birthday order and snagged Hiding Places, the blue variant of GNX and the colored version of Alligators Bites from Turntable labs (which allowed me to skip the laughable $15 shipping fees Wood's online shop charges). So thanks to everyone who made me aware of the repress. Oh, and I found a NM/VG+ version of the 2LP Cornballs on Discogs for 25$ and pulled the trigger since @Rip_City struck out last night. Again, this community is the best.

Yeah... I don't know what to say other than Aethiopes was a weird release and I believe that it was only available on tour, at first. He was doing some quick releases like that around that time. That said, I own that and Church, both of which I bought online. He founded Backwoodz Studioz so that's his label, meaning that he does have everything pressed himself. I have locals that carry Backwoodz releases from time to time and he even did an Armand Hammer Diabetic Test Strips release through Fat Possum. Ironically, that only made it cost more, which is why I don't own that one.

I only know Reckless Records from them taking orders on products they don't have and canceling them on me repeatedly. Calling it "gate keeping" for Woods to run his own independent label and sell directly seems a bit absurd to me. Pressing vinyl is expensive and overpressing vinyl that you wind up sitting on as an indie label is even more expensive. Shops like HHV or Vinyl Digital generally get them for the European market. The Hiding Places anniversary reissue was a limited release.

I wouldn't have even commented, but the claim that every one of his releases can ONLY be purchased on tour simply isn't true. I also have no idea why shipping would cost you $15 from his site, because that's not standard either. I just pre-ordered his new album yesterday and shipping was $8 and change. A few years ago, it was about $6.50, even for multiple records.

I'm simply saying this as someone who owns no less than 8 Billy Woods albums, not including the 5 or so Armand Hammer LPs in my collection, and none of them were purcased at shows. Everything has been readily available, but if you miss it and are trying to get last year's limited reissue from the Hiding Places tour at your local now, I'm sure it can be a problem.

Honestly, I think vinyl is overpriced in general and lots of hip hop releases are egregious about these drops. I have no horse in this, other than reading something that I know not to be true from years and years of personal experience. I believe you had the experience you did and that it left a bad impression, but that's not the situation across the board. We post every drop in the hip hop thread and have since it started. I believe the first post in there was actually about Hiding Places.

If you don't want to give him money because he rubbed you the wrong way, I have similar situations where I am the exact sane way. If you're being overcharged shipping, that's fucked up. BUT... if you were simply under the wrong impression because of what he said and ever want any of the future releases, I'm happy to tag you when they happen.

@Dead C

I appreciate all of this. I definitely wasn't trying to pick a fight homie. We've had enough convos over the years for me to know that we both value supporting indie artists and love underground hip-hop.

I could have sworn that while sitting his site I saw a $15 shipping disclaimer. I could have read it wrong.

We completely agree about the price of wax. The prices combined with a lack of quality control caused me to stop buying for roughly 4 years... unless I was buying at a show. (Thus trying to track down Cornball even though it was my favorite album of 2019).

I've picked back up up after investing in a Record Pi but am being far more picky than in the past.

And you are 100% right about rap album prices being the worst. This birthday splurge was specifically aimed at filling gaps. And I wound up going with Doiche and Kendrick because those albums were priced at $30. The reason the Billy Woods interaction is seared into my brain is because he was so defensive about the $50 price. Contrast that with me saying nothing but "I'd like the copy of Music for Cavelight, how much" to Blockhead last week and him getting all apologetic over it costing $40. And that was a gorgeous 4LP with b-sides.

I get that the underground scsne is more niche that ever and these guys need to make $. I'm glad Woods is putting stuff on his on the site. I bet you are right and it was just that album (a great fucking album). But its still frustrating that if I'm gonna be paying 40$ for an album that I can't swing by any of the great record stores in Chicago, support them and forgo shipping.

And Reckless is fucking awesome. They have relationships with musicians from all over and have insanely reasonable prices and the biggest selection of any store in Chicago. I find signed stuff there all the time and artists have their own label (ala LCD Soundsystem or Modest Mouse) can often be found for $5 under typical SRP... I alsonjust found out they take your name on requests while calling I was about Cunninlynguists (and there are no fights on returns for a warped record either).

Their website is just non-functional.
