Day 14: Nice Package

This was the first Shellac I purchased on vinyl - I had At Action Park and Terraform on CD, but when I saw this at the store I knew I needed to get it. The LP and CD are housed in a box that is set up like it is a master tape reel, even includes a sticker for tracklisting and notes.

The CD is without any print, so it can be hard to tell what is the playing side sometimes.

Halsey - BADLANDS

I got into Halsey after my brother played me her song “Gasoline” (which is only on the deluxe edition of this album that’s not on vinyl, unfortunately). It’s also thanks to him that I got into twenty one pilots.

Day 16: Family Ties

I'd say my brother has influenced me the most with music. I don't remember if he ever played me Hawkwind or not, but his influence of other punk / prog / krautrock bands certainly influenced me.

Oddly enough, there's not a ton of artists I didn't find on my own. This isn't to say my family didn't have influence or my friends didn't surprise me but most of my collections are self-discovered. However there are a few.

One that sounds out to me is from my mother. We didn't really discuss music a ton and most of my influence form her was me borrowing/ripping CDs she had to my iTunes. That's how I began my musical deep dive of Norah Jones among others. One of her funnier stories to tell was of a disastrous Allman Brothers show, To be honest it's been like 20 years so I can't remember a ton of the details - I think it was post Dickey Betts and there was a lot of issues around what songs the remaining members of the band would or could perform. She complained about that show for quite a bit. About 15 years after that we went to an Allman Brothers tribute show in Mass when I won free tickets, I think we lasted about 30 minutes before we noped out of that.

Never had the live luck, but I am guessing this one contains at least one, maybe two of the songs she wanted to hear that night. Funny enough, the copy I picked up...skips a bit on Ramblin' Man. Figures right?

The Who - Quadrophenia

One of my oldest and closest friends let me borrow a CD of this album in high school and it blew my teenage mind. Lots of fond memories of us hanging out and blasting The Who.

Day 16: Family Ties - Play a record/artist that was introduced to you by someone in your family or a close friend

I was introduced to D'Angelo the day this was released. My record collecting buddy from work told me this was like Marvin Gaye releasing a new record after being silent for 15 years. He also said it would be right up my alley. He was right and I ended up buying the back-discography while I was at it. (And damn, I miss my lunch walks talking about music with him!)

Elton John - Honky Château

I was indoctrinated into the world of Elton John fandom from my mother essentially from my birth forward. My mom always loved him and had the majority of his album on vinyl. I imagine I would still enjoy his music regardless but the added attachment to both my youth and my mom will always cause me to hold Elton’s music close to my heart.

I have a big sister, four years my elder. She introduced to many fine artists and albums when we were young - Back in Black, Cheap Trick at Budokan and The Knack all come to mind. I decided to go with Genesis S/T today because I absolutely loved Mama when she played it for me, and I still do. I can't explain why, it's just one of those songs.

Day 16 - Family ties

Pretty much my first memories of hearing music come from this album, as my dad played it to death when I was a toddler in the late 80s. It’s still engrained in my brain. If I ever get Alzheimer’s, I bet this album will be like the one thing I still remember clearly.
