She took an unfinished song from Bruce and made it her own...

Springsteen has never made a studio version of the song, but he sings his version often.

Eek... I have a lot of catching up to do 😬

DAY 14
NICE PACKAGE
Death Grips - Year of the Snitch
I've always gotten a kick out of the packaging for this album. Especially what they did with the mouths being cut out from the cover!

And of course, the very "graphic design is my passion" back cover:

DAY 16
FAMILY TIES
KISS - Rock and Roll Over
My dad is a huge KISS fan so naturally I heard their music pretty regularly growing up (now you know why I am the way I am 🤪). I don't usually listen to them on my own time but I admittedly have a soft spot for a lot of their music because my dad likes them so much, so this felt like a good choice for this theme 😄

DAY 17
SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL
Herbie Hancock - Crossings
I don't have a local record store 😭 the closest thing near me is a flea market not too terribly far from where I live that I go digging for records at from time to time. It's usually just typical bargain bin fodder, but every so often you can find gems like this hidden in the rough 🔥

Counting Crows - August And Everything After

Not the first songwriter that typically comes to mind, but hard to ignore when the opening track starts with these lines:

Step out the front door like a ghost into the fog
Where no one notices the contrast of white on white
And in between the moon and you
The angels get a better view
Of the crumbling difference between wrong and right

I may as well go with the published poet. In many ways hip hop is one of the most poetic genres and her liner notes often read in that manner. From Sound the Bells

Looks like our writing on the wall
Is lorem ipsum after all
A higher tide will wash it all
Wash it all away

The lighthouse keeper's last relay:
Hand shadows and a final wave
Now's the time to rouse yourself
Spend the strength you've saved

The Beach Boys - Surf’s Up

The Beach Boys lyrically can be a bit all over the place especially Post-Pet Sounds when Brian stepped back and seceded control of the group to other members. You get some half-bake Psychedelica, some preachy environmental tomes, and some heart-tugging nostalgia, but the truly poetic stuff tends to be the leftovers from the SMiLE sessions penned by Brian and writing partner Van Dyke Parks. The albums following the aborted session usually included one or two reworked versions of some of SMiLE’s best tracks and Surf’s Up was no exception. In fact, this albums title track was such a cut and boy is “Surf’s Up” a doozy lyrically...

“A diamond necklace played the pawn
Hand in hand some drummed along, oh
To a handsome man and baton
A blind class aristocracy
Back through the opera glass you see
The pit and the pendulum drawn
Columinated ruins domino”

...“Surfin’ U.S.A.” This Ain’t.

Day 18 - National Poetry Month

Robert Hunter’s lyrics came to mind. It’s pretty rare for a band to employ a non-performing lyricist, but obviously Hunter made it worth their while. From Ripple:

Reach out your hand, if your cup be empty
If your cup is full, may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men

Day 17: Support Your Local Record Store
a record you bought from your local independent shop.

I'm making a post-covid resolution to go shop at local record stores more, since I rarely have done so in the past. So here is one that was bought at a local, but not by myself. It was a secret santa gift! It was also a Record Store Day Black Friday exclusive. Thanks @Thackeraye !!!

Day 14: Nice Package: "Your favourite packaging on a record. Box set, singular album, anything..."

Man I'm behind! Hopefully I can catch up this week... :) I've always enjoyed this packaging. It's a great representation of such a beautiful album. It's over the years become one of my favorite of all time.IMG_2350.jpegIMG_2351.jpegIMG_2352.jpegIMG_2353.jpeg
