DAY 26
A OR B
Carly Rae Jepsen - Dedicated Side B
While I don't think either side of this album is particularly "bad" I find the second half much more memorable and interesting than the first. The run from "Summer Love" to "Now I Don't Hate California After All" is remarkable for what is essentially an album of odds and ends leftovers. Who would have thought Side B of Side B would be better? 😛

You know, now that I'm listening to it in full again for the first time in a while, I'm remembering that the first half actually has some bops on it as well. This may have been a bad choice for this theme... 😅

Edit: I stand by it. Side B is stronger!

Kraftwerk- Autobahn

The title track takes up all of side A and is an incredible song. Not just my favorite Kraftwerk song, but one of my favorite songs ever. It’s exhilarating and beautiful. It’s so good, that I’ll often just stop listening once the song is over. Side B doesn’t come close to matching the quality of side A.

Maybe not the entire side, but I wrote myself a note to skip a track on this one. Brilliant album, though!

EDIT: listening to that track now, I'm not sure why I skipped it. I may need to remove that note! :)

Iggy & The Stooges "Raw Power" (1973 Columbia; 2012 RSD 2xLP reissue with 1973 Bowie and 1997 Iggy mixes)

I'm on team Bowie Mix. Though I do like Iggy's mix of Search & Destroy quite a bit. Playing Iggy's mix for a change today.

Occasionally I think about themes I would put on a monthly challenge if I wrote one and this was one of my favorites. Great choice.

Of course, since I thought about the theme, I had one album in mind. Despite my thoughts on one side being my go-to, I think the album is a true gem of the last five years, I just think Side B is nearly flawless and the hyper repetitiveness of the chorus and outros of the first two tracks of Side A get challenging to listen to.

Side B sounds like today's choice, or maybe Side A starting on track 3.

Jerry Garcia - Garcia

A... or more accurately to this title, Side 1 is the keeper. This album actually makes great use of the idea of an album being split into two parts, Side 1 is very traditional Blues-centric Rock music featuring some of the best songs Garcia every sang, with the Dead or otherwise; Side 2... well, that’s a different ball of wax completely. Side 2 is where he really lets his experimental side run wild. Made up of a suite of songs and longer instrumental pieces, Side 2 feels more like song ideas than actual songs. The Dead would eventually flesh out some of the side 2 tracks live, turning them into very different versions of how they appear here. Still Side 2 isn’t bad, it is just completely different than what proceeded it and can be a bit of a shock to the system if you’re not expecting it, especially after following a Side 1 that is chocked full of classic cuts.

Drive-By Truckers - The Unraveling

While I enjoy this album as a whole, and think it's a solid addition to the DBT catalogue, the B-side of the album for me is definitely the strong winner. The last 3 songs especially are the greatest 3-song run they've had since the early/mid-oughts.

Adrianne Lenker - Songs and Instrumentals

Might be cheating a bit since these are technically 2 separate albums, but they’re packaged together and I don’t think you can buy separately. Disc 1 is Songs, which is a set of beautiful, personal acoustic tracks. Disc 2 is Instrumentals, which is a couple long ambient/experimental tracks. They’re fine, but as someone who owns 75+ ambient/new age LPs, they don’t really rate with other stuff I could play in that vein instead.
