17th August - Kind Of Blue
Today marks the 62nd anniversary of Miles Davis’ seminal album ‘Kind Of Blue’. Play the album OR your favourite jazz album.

I actually ordered the Kind of Blue UHQR but it has not shipped yet. So favorite jazz record... probably this one:

Panthalassa: The Music Of Miles Davis 1969-1974 (Reconstruction and translation by Bill Laswell)

I know it is probably heresy, but this was my introduction to Miles and I still really love this cd. His electric period is phenomenal.

“Panthalassa opens with the entire “In a Silent Way” album condensed into one glorious, 15-minute mix. Laswell takes the ambience of the original and focuses it into a coherent track which has a definite beginning, middle, and end, with a central theme occurring at the opening and closing. He adds in some guitar recorded during the session but unreleased on the original album”

16th August - This should be Grand.
Today would be the birthdays of pianists Bill Evans and Mal Waldron. Play an album that features the piano as a key element.

Just got the new Tipitina's release and it fits so...

Also, an incredibly bad-ass sticker included.

James Booker - True Live At Tipitina's

Lots of Miles for this one so I'll go in a different direction but still keep it 'blue'......Afro Blue.

18th August - “Old Enough...To Party.”
Superbad was released in cinema’s 14-years ago. Play an album from your youth - imaginary bonus points if there is an embarrassing story linked to it!

I have to play this record for today but will relate a story involving another JB jam.

When I was 14 or so I heard the song "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine". It was thought provoking. I inquired about how exactly the contraption worked, the availability of said Sex Machine and where one might procure one. Hopes were dashed when I was informed one must be 18 years old to purchase. C'est la vie.

I will always associate this one being on CD in my mother's car.

Pink Floyd - Meddle

My mom loves Pink Floyd and she listened to them a lot when I was real little. I remember her telling me why they were so great and creative.

I was real young so it didn’t really connect with me at that age, but in my late teens I figured out what she was talking about when I sat down and really listened for myself.

Duran Duran "Duran Duran" (1981 US Harvest pressing)
I've mentioned this before, but I was a massive Duranie throughout junior high and the first few years of high school. One could consider that embarrassing in and of itself. But I still think Duran Duran is awesome, especially their initial run up to and including Notorious, plus a smattering of diamonds in the rough later on (All I Need Is Now is a damn fine late career record). I finally got to see them play live at the Metropolis in Montreal in 1998. Simon threw down like in his hey day. So much fun. And of course, I sung along to all the classics. Decided to spin the first LP today.

Meddle has been my favourite Floyd album since I first heard it almost 40 years ago. I can listen to Echoes over and over

I love Echoes. It could be the only song on the album and it would still be one of my favorites.

Have you played Echoes sync'ed to the final 22 minutes of 2001? It's uncanny how well they match in time and rhythm. There are YouTube videos that merge them together.

My favourite memory of "Echoes" is when I was staying in my dad's basement after dropping out of college and popped in my room to ask me something only to see me baked off my gourd watching the smoke rise off my incense while I was listening to "Echoes." His question went something like: "Hey, I need... you know what, it can wait." :ROFLMAO:

Simple Minds - New Gold Dream

I bought this in late 1982, I would have been 14 at the time. I remember Glittering Prize was getting a bit of airplay in Canada and I just loved the bass line intro. Probably purchased with Christmas money that year. Nothing embarrassing about it. Didn’t lick the record or try to snort coke off it.
