Day 18: “Old Enough...To Party.”
Superbad was released in cinema’s 14-years ago. Play an album from your youth - imaginary bonus points if there is an embarrassing story linked to it!

Green Day - Dookie

The summer following 6th grade the three Rock albums that mattered the most to me were In Utero, The Blue Album, and This, Green Day’s Dookie. Those albums will always have a big space in my heart shaped box because they are the first albums I genuinely loved that were actual albums as opposed to just a single or two. Of the 3 this is probably the one I listen to the least but it’s still a pretty fantastic album.

Grade 8 was an amazing and revelatory time for me, musically, but thanks to a good ol' dose of media racism and fear-mongering my mom decided this album in particular was banned from our household - which I wasn't keen on at all. At some point I borrowed a schoolmate's cassette copy of the album, but stupidly left the raunchy comic strip insert on the bathroom shelf one evening only to have my mom's mom come across it! Well, fuck me was my mother unimpressed! I caught a lot of shit for that and from there onward kept my banned-from-our-house collection (including this album) to dubbed cassettes only, lest I face her wrath again.

Inexplicably she had no major objections to my buying the Murder Was The Case soundtrack a year later! 🤣

Beck - Odelay

The singles from this album were rock radio staples all through my high school years (it came out the year before I entered HS). It's not on this album, but once when I was at a friend's house I referenced Beck's "Loser," and the (very Mormon) mother of my friend overheard me and told my (very Mormon) stepmother what I had been listening to... and I got grounded for a week. When I picked up this CD, I had to keep it and all my small collection well hidden at the bottom of my dirty clothes hamper where they would never be found because just the song title "Jack-Ass" listed on the back cover would have led to some severe punishment or other. I may be one of the rare kids that got to listen to Weezer's blue album and feel like I was a rebel risking it all.

Reminds me kinda of my mom, she was weird about things she decided she cared about. Being the eldest in my family, she regularly decided certain things were vulgar. While other things were seemingly completely fine. A good example was this CD, I used my paper route money to purchase it but in my hometown the only places that sold CDs were Walmart and KMART and I sure as shit didn’t want the censored version so I gave the money to my mom so she could pick it up for me at Best Buy, which she did without any issue whatsoever. Released on the exact same day, I also wanted to purchase The Beavis And Butt-Head Experience however I was not allowed to watch B&B because that was deemed “inappropriate” and I knew my mom wouldn’t buy that for me but since it wasn’t “Parental Advisory” I road my bicycle to KMART and picked it up myself. Well, a few weeks later my mom found the Beavis & Butt-Head CD and made me give it away to one of my friends.

So to summarize: album named after a sex position and featuring songs about drugs, alcohol, murder… Totally fine.

but an album featuring some crudely animated morons that’s big hit song was a cover of Sonny & Cher’s “I Got You Babe” wasn’t allowed under my mother’s roof…makes perfect sense.

My parents actually confiscated my Doggystyle cassette that my older cousin acquired for me. Then, they gave it back to me as wrapped gift at my HS graduation, along with a bottle of booze they took sometime along the way (Absolut Mandarin 😂).

Oh yeah, it definitely sounds like we had similar mom stuff.

The Beavis And Butt-Head Experience was also part of my banned-from-our-house covertly dubbed tape collection. Not because mom objected strenuously to B&B mind you (she certainly didn't like them but, strangely, seemed to find Bart Simpson more offensive) but because the Nirvana song it included (which was the main reason I even wanted it in the first place) was called "I Hate Myself And Want To Die."

Linkin Park ‎– Meteora (Warner Records Inc., 2021 Limited RSD Pressing)

I listened to this yesterday and forgot to post it....so I'm listening again. As an angsty teen I used to listen to Linkin Park quite a bit despite my friendship group, at the time, being into 'heavier' stuff. I tried to get into it but it never really clicked and it wasn't until I ventured off and explored music myself that I began to actually listen to stuff that I really liked. Linkin Park isn't a group that I play too much but when I do it's always fantastic and brings back memories. I used to listen to this album (a burned CD copy) in my room and would always have my parents shouting up to turn it down.

The Beatles finished recording this track today. Play an artist that you think is overhyped or that you have never clicked with.

Caroline Rose - Loner

I requested a cancellation for my ticket of this tour date that has still not been rescheduled yet. Only purchased this album because it was a bargain during a New West sale last year. This album is kinda just OK for me.

The Beatles ‎– Abbey Road (Apple Records, 1969 First UK Pressing - I think)

Mayyyyybe @TenderLovingKiller® was correct in his assessment that I set this challenge as a way of throwing shade....maybe. I have mentioned a few times before that I never clicked with the Beatles. Growing up here in England you just couldn't get away from them and despite never actually listening to one of their albums until late in my teens I probably know the words to a dozen of their songs. I have also mentioned how easy to find their records were (along with all the 'classic' Bowie, Queen, etc) and as a result, I have quite a stack of their records gathering dust on the shelf.

This isn't to say that I cant appreciate their music. I'm just flipping to the B-side of Abbey Road and it's been enjoyable, just not something that I personally think warrants a cult following the way they have. It's just....ok?

16th August - This should be Grand.
Today would be the birthdays of pianists Bill Evans and Mal Waldron. Play an album that features the piano as a key element.

I was thinking about finding something a bit more rock n' roll, but my brain isn't working well yet - need coffee, but this nice to start the day to.

You all get 2 jazz albums in a row from me....I feel dirty.

My parents were masters of contradicting rules. I wasn’t allowed to watch or read Harry Potter because witchcraft was evil. But I could read and watch Lord of the Rings where one of the main good guys is a literal WIZARD who uses magic.

My dad also bought me a book about Merlin and his adventures when he was young. Merlin... the WIZARD who uses magic. But Harry Potter? That’s evil.

yeah. It was ok for me to watch R-Rated horror movies as a kid, but heaven forbid I listen to my brothers cassette of Appetite For Destruction.

Our mom dropped us off at a theater when I was 9 years old - my brother 11, to see Nightmare On Elm Street 3. They let us rent horror movies on the weekend.

But the one time my dad was walking down the hall and heard the line "It's so fucking easy", he took the tape out to the garage and smash it with a hammer.

No imaginary bonus points for this one. I never owned this album until now - I didn't really need to, as you really couldn't not hear it wherever you went.

It does remind me that I haven't watched Dogma in a while - I'm glad I got the blu ray before it went OOP

Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space

I wouldn’t go so far as to call this overrated, but I’ve had a hard time connecting with this album. For years. I like it, but there’s just something about it that keeps me at arms length.

It’s honestly frustrating, because on paper I should love this. Maybe it’s the production? The sequencing of tracks? I’m really not sure.

I’ve never tried listening with the aid of my favorite green plant. Maybe I should try that.
