August 2021 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread: Summer Loving

18th August - “Old Enough...To Party.”
Superbad was released in cinema’s 14-years ago. Play an album from your youth - imaginary bonus points if there is an embarrassing story linked to it!

True story, I listened to this very record on a suitcase record player (my uncles) when I was a kid. All the scratches prove it. I know... vinyl abuse, I should go to counseling or something. I'm so embarrassed!

Glen Campbell - Rhinestone Cowboy

I probably ought to get a new clean version someday.

19th August - Here Comes The Sun.
The Beatles finished recording this track today. Play an artist that you think is overhyped or that you have never clicked with.

Father John Misty - God's Favorite Customer

I know it was kinda the point of his shtick to be overrated and ironic, but it still didn't click with me.

The record label even pretentiously fakes a test pressing, complete with a sticker on it.

This type of theme is a bit difficult in that I really don't buy things I don't like...and if I do, then I don't usually keep it. The exception would be things that are sent to me unsolicited or part of subscription like VMP.

There are a few bands that I just can't get into - even though I've tried. The Eagles and Supertramp are 2 that I can come up with really quick. But I've made a choice not to even buy their albums.

There are some bands/artists that are overhyped, but I still love them. This one may be a hot take...

but Metallica hasn't had a great album in 30 years. Load/Reload had some moments, but otherwise weren't good. St. Anger is St. Anger, no need to rehash that. Death Magnetic and this one are OK at best....both have some good tracks, but they aren't great albums.

Metallica has turned into a Greatest Hits touring band, but I still love them.

This is pretty much an impossible challenge for me, since I don't own records by artists that I think are overhyped or that I never clicked with. Why would I buy a record by for example, U2, The National or Bon Iver (those are just examples, I'm neither confirming nor denying my thoughts on those bands but if I had one of their records, there is a possibility that I'd play it, maybe with earplugs on).

So why not play some Beatles in honor of our host?

The Beatles "Revolver" (1966 Parlophone; 2018 STEREO reissue)
If all works out, this might be one of the last times I play this pressing since I just ordered a Japanese ODEON, which I have good hope will be an upgrade.

Radiohead - Kid A

Well, I can't play something I don't care for, because then I wouldn't have it on vinyl (although I do have plenty of CDs that would fit the bill), so I'm going with overhyped and overrated.

Oh, and by the way, this is probably my favorite album ever. But, yes, it's overrated.

But the beautiful thing is that it's all overrated, that music is nothing but some sounds arranged in this way or that, some words that may or may not mean something, that it's ultimately pointless and useless... and yet...

And yet that fact is that this arrangement of sounds and words is important to me, has helped me, has burrowed its way into my brain in a way few real and important things have, has led me to give my time and mind to it, 50 minutes at a time, over and over again.

The fact that music (and art and literature) can even be overhyped or overrated (by me) is one of the things I'm grateful for in life.

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

This record is alright. It’s far and away my favorite Arctic Monkeys album, IMO there output has gotten progressively worse with each album. This one is a pretty good album but I would be just as content spinning a record by The Libertines, or Franz Ferdinand, or Cribs, or Kasabian, or Kaiser Chiefs, or etc…, etc…, etc….

(same band, different record)
Radiohead - King of Limbs

I hate hype and will often go out of my way to avoid anything tainted with it. This is why I have not seen Forest Gump/Avatar/Titanic/Whatever Avengers movie that made a gazillion dollars.

For a long time Radiohead fit into the category of being overhyped and underdelivering (and really, they still do). But as I get older I tend to avoid 95% of the music press now unless I am looking for something specific. This has definitely helped for me getting into and enjoying Radiohead.

Oh, I still don’t really like the Beatles and I really dislike The Beach Boys.

20th August - Space, The Final Frontier.

Voyager 2 launched on this day in 1977 carrying with it the ‘Golden Record’. Play a space-themed album.

(No one is snookering me on this one, I am claiming the @Selaw GMT clause on this and posting before midnight EST)

So many Bowie to choose from. You could pretty much post any of his albums from Space Oddity to Scary Monsters and claim at least 1 song with a sci-fi theme. So how about a record that started out as a musical version of 1984 but then morphed into a Burroughsian dystopia filled with roller skating wild boys in a decadent and dying Hunger City.

Lou Donaldson - “Hot Dog”.

I’m a big fan of classic Blue Note jazz, but Lou Donaldson, I just don’t click with him. Played “Hot Dog” today; still don’t click. And don’t get me started about “Mr. Shing-A-Ling”.

City And Colour - The Hurry And The Harm
20210819_190515.jpg

I have so many people in my life who absolutely love City and Colour (hilariously one of them messaged me out of the blue 3 minutes after I started spinning this!) but I just can't get so into it. I certainly don't hate it (like The Eagles), and won't complain when it's playing (like The Eagles), but I don't find myself compelled by anything other than a prompt like this to actually go out of my way to listen. My wife loves this album though, so I'm glad we have it because it makes her happy.

I do have an Eagles album on the shelf that an old co-worker picked up in a bargain bin for me as a joke knowing how much I hate them, and I thought it might be good for today's prompt, but then I'd have to listen to The fucking Eagles!

20th August - Space, The Final Frontier.

The Curtis Counce Quintet ‎– Exploring The Future (Dootone Records, 1970 Pressing)

I recently finished reading the fantastic 'West Coast Jazz: Modern Jazz in California, 1945-1960' by Ted Gioia and was reminded of this fantastic album. West Coast jazz at its finest and with fantastic cover art. The original pressing is in full colour but rarely pops up for sale, so I will make do with this purple-ish one. The tracks have space themed titles ('Race For Space', 'Into Orbit') as well.

More of a Space Jazz Fusion than the Hawkwind Space Rock I was expecting, this does have some good tracks and features artists such as legendary jazz drummer Billy Cobham, Doors’ guitarist Robby Krieger, Steve Hillage of Gong, Soft Machine’s John Etheridge, Amon Düül II founder John Weinzierl and more.
