August 2021 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread: Summer Loving

23rd August - Memorabilia Monday.
Show us some cool memorabilia (poster, ticket stub, photo, etc) of a band/musician and play one of their albums.

I am not much of a poster, ticket stub, etc. collector. I do like to take photos of shows, and one of my favorite things about collecting vinyl is to get them signed at shows.

Nicole Atkins - Goodnight Rhonda Lee

Plus a bonus print from Nicole.

Susan Tedeschi has a band. It's really good. Derek Trucks has a band. It's really good. Derek and Susan are married. They decide they want to work together full time. In a beautiful musical moment not involving actual music, Derek and Susan make the choice to combine both their individual bands into one group, involving everyone and leaving no one out in the cold.

Such incredible class and integrity. And the band smokes...

I have a pair of Feist shirts. I was a bigger fan in my late teens.

The Jazz Couriers With Ronnie Scott And Tubby Hayes - In Concert (Tempo, 1958 First Mono Pressing)

Well seeing as I forgot to post yesterday I decided to dig out a mix of memorabilia that relates to the album I chose, The Jazz Couriers' 1958 'In Concert'. There's a mix of Tubby Hayes related bits here, 2 autographs, several original posters from his very early 1950 gigs, the biography and a programme. The programme is actually from the Dave Brubeck UK tour in 1958 which The Jazz Couriers supported, with the live recording of 'In Concert' being from the tour and recorded at London's Dominion theatre.

Deafheaven - Sunbather

Discogs randomizer has spoken. And a good choice too. This is one my favorite albums of the last decade. I struggle to think of any other record that moves me the same way this does.

To me this album is painfully beautiful. Harsh and intense yet delicate and peaceful. Soul crushing, but also triumphant. A perfect blending of black metal and shoegaze that no one else has managed to pull off since, including themselves imo.

Despite not enjoying their most recent release, this album will always mean a lot to me.

Turiya Alice Coltrane & Devadip Carlos Santana - Illuminations

Nice pick, Discogs!

No huge story here. I used to work across the street from my local and would pop in pretty much daily. One day after work I spotted this in the jazz new arrivals, had no idea it existed before that moment and immediately Tina'd that shit, as they day.

Fantastic! I found a copy of this at my local carboot earlier in the summer and really enjoyed it. Going to add it to my play pile for later!

The Roots – The Roots Come Alive (MCA Records, 1999 First Pressing)

I went down the Discogs randomiser route and came out with a belter! When I first started buying The Roots records I went for the live releases first as they tended to be cheaper (The Roots Come Alive, Live Au Festival Rock En Seine, What!! R U In Awe??) but nowadays some of them demand more money than the studio albums! I had the immense pleasure of seeing them live here in London at Somerset House in 2018 and it was such an electric gig, they completely nailed it and it was probably one of the best performances I have ever seen, they had the crowd in their hand the entire time. We managed to get a spot at the front row as well so we had an incredible view.

Day 22: Wu-Tang Forever!
Today is GZA’s 55th birthday. Play a hip-hop album to commemorate the day

Beast Coast - Escape From New York

Since I waited too long to play any of my Wu-Related releases (BTW, I need to add some more Ghostface and ODB too my collection) I figured I would play a current NYC based Rap Collective/Super Group, Beast Coast. A group consisting of whopping 10 members made up of the members of The Flatbush Zombies, Pro Era, and The Underachievers.

This is my first ever autographed album and test pressing. I purchased it more for the test pressing than the autograph, normally I am not a big autograph guy because illegibility scribbled signature fucks up the album art but since it was a test press it didn’t come with the original artwork anyways so why not? Mine is number 5 of 18.

This album is my 2nd favorite SY album (behind. Daydream Nation) Sonic Youth was a band that I really didn’t come to appreciate fully until my early to mid 20’s I enjoyed them a bit during Dirty, Experimental Jet Set, Washing Machine era but my ears were not ready to appreciate the abrasive art rock goodness. The part that always blows my mind is how long Sonic Youth have been impossibly cool.

Day 23 - Memorabilia Tuesday

I still try to get paper tix at venue box offices prior to shows. Mostly because you can buy them with no fees that way, but I also do keep them and tuck them in LP jackets. I don’t always remember which shows I got them for though - took me a few tries to find one.

A long long time ago I used to work for radio stations and record labels and part of that was attending a lot of meet and greets. This one was one of my favorites, but my wife absolutely hated this poster. One day I came home and “the kids had ripped it and it was thrown away.” I’ll bet. 😉 I once sent this photo to a friend who was a fan and now that’s all I have left of it.

I’ll buy just about anything Matthew Sweet puts out but this is an exceptional release. A “supergroup” that doesn’t usually come to mind immediately when discussing “supergroups”
