August 2021 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread: Summer Loving

Day 24 - That’s Random

Discogs random - a pretty new one (to me) - VMP country. Not really a great story to this one besides the fact that I’ve had this album on my list for a few years actually and was happy to get a AAA reissue (originals are pretty hard to find and not cheap).

The Jimi Hendrix Experience "Electric Ladyland" (1968 Reprise; 2015 Hendrix Family reissue)
Pressed the "random item" button on Discogs and this is what came up. Picked up this copy on the recommendation of the fine folks in the definitive audiophile pressings thread. And a superb pressing it is. Full analogue and pressed at QRP. And inexpensive too. That's my story.

The Mountain Goats - In League With Dragons

One does not simply tell stories about Mountain Goats albums, for each one is itself an infinity of stories.

My random pick: Ornette Coleman - “The Shape of Jazz to Come”

BE4BE4D4-0155-4791-A504-CD452ED86E70.jpeg

I was not a big fan of free jazz; I’m more of a hard bop kind of guy. Free jazz had always left me wanting it to end before it’s time was up.

During the pandemic last year, after stores started limited reopening, I saw this album discounted in an abysmally small vinyl jazz section. I picked it up and found that I actually do like this particular free jazz romp. I ate the green eggs and ham.

25th August - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

Mariah Carey - Self-titled

I love Mariah. Anytime one of her songs comes on the radio, or in a public place we’re at, my wife always turns to me and says “here’s your girl.” She gets it.

Solange won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. Probably should have won more as an album.

Joni Mitchell - Ladies of the Canyon (another excellent pressing from the recent box set).

Was going to play Clouds as that was her first Grammy, but I felt like this one instead.

Only the 5th Country Music artist to win the Album of the Year Grammy. (The other four were: Glenn Campbell, O Brother… Soundtrack, Dixie Chicks, and Taylor Swift). I am excited we’re getting a new album from Kacey here real soon.

Ill Considered – 10 - The Stroke (Ill Considered Music, 2021 First Limited Box Set Pressing)

This is an interesting one as the artwork literally influenced the music. Vincent DeBoer has been the unofficial 5th member of Ill Considered since their first release and his instantly recognisable artwork ties each album together. For their 10th album, DeBoer spent 1.5-years planning, plus a further 6-months drawing, 4056 pieces of artwork that came together as a single animation. The animation was then played to the group for the first time whilst they improvised music over the top (which became part of the music on the album). The frames were then split across 338 LP boxes which made up this limited release. The box includes the LP itself, 12 original drawings from the animation (grouped together with a wrap-around piece), stickers and postcards. The box itself was designed to have one of the original pieces wrapped around it as well.
