Choose Your Own Adventure - The October 2024 Spin Challenge

10-Oct On this day in 1960. A silly novelty song called "Mr. Custer" by Larry Verne was the top tune on Billboard's Hot 100. The record told a story about a US cavalry trooper who tries to talk his way out of fighting the Sioux Indians at Little Big Horn in 1876. The song reached #9 on the R&B chart, and although Verne's rendition failed to chart at all in the UK, a cover version by Charlie Drake was successful. Expert: Play a novelty album that charted.

Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics

I guess I need to start Christmas early to keep my points going. An album of novelty Christmas songs that is also a novelty in itself with the shit smelling vinyl! It also reached #33 on Billboard's Christmas Album chart in 1999!

11-Oct On this day in 1975, Neil Sedaka's comeback continued with his second number one hit of the year, "Bad Blood". In the span of just eight months, he also wrote two other chart topping hits, his own "Laughter In The Rain" and The Captain And Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together". To date, Sedaka has written or cowritten over 500 songs. Expert: Play an album by an artist in the song-writers hall of fame who has written a top 10 hit for themselves and for another artist/band.

Robert Zimmerman was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall Of Fame in 1982, had a Top 10 hit of his own with Like A Rolling Stone in 1965 and wrote The Byrds #1 smash Mr. Tambourine Man...

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band - Fire

The Boss has had a number of top 10s to his name (no #1s tho, and no, “We Are the World” doesn’t count), including at least two that other artists had covered; Natalie Cole had “Pink Cadillac” & the Pointer Sisters had “Fire”.

Point total: 26.5

Welp. I don't (and hopefully continue to never) possess any vinyl related to novelty music. I have to begrudgingly go a difficulty level up. So...

Inducted into the Songwriter Hall of Fame in 1984. Part of the Brill Building era of songwriters, he wrote I'm A Believer for the Monkees among a bunch of others. And had a number of his own performances break the top 10 as well. Gotta go with the 'other' Neil.

Also a candidate for the album cover that really weirded me out as a kid. And kind of still does.

10-Expert: Play a novelty album that charted.

The B-52's "The B-52's" (1979 Warner; 2011 MOFI reissue)
I'd consider this a novelty band considering their gimmick. Rock Lobster only peaked around top-50 although very much because it's a catchy and fun novelty song, it had staying power on college radios and campuses. SCORE = 52.5

David Bowie "BBC Radio Theatre, London, June 27 2000 (Live)" (2021 Parlophone, from Brilliant Adventure boxset)
Bowie is in the songwriter's hall of fame. He wrote All The Young Dudes for Mott The Hoople. Bowie's had many top-10 hits and All The Young Dudes was a top-10 for Mott. Bowie plays All The Young Dudes during this show. SCORE = 60.5

David Bowie - Aladdin Sane
Total: 15 (10.5+4.5)

From the Wikipedia on this album:
In an effort to ensure RCA promoted the album extensively, Bowie's manager Tony Defries was determined to make the cover as costly as possible. He insisted on an unprecedented seven-colour system, rather than the usual four.
