Choose Your Own Adventure - The October 2024 Spin Challenge

Expert: Play an album by a musician from a Red state who Republicans tried to cancel for not supporting their politics (Taylor Swift does not count :-)).

...and seemed like they might have succeeded, but The Chicks ditched the Dixie and came back better than ever.

8-Oct On this day in 2018, Taylor Swift goes public with her politics and endorses two Tennessee Democrats, urging her 112 million Instagram followers to vote causing a spike in voter registrations. Jason is from Alabama, and lives in Tennessee, both red states. He's excellent at shutting down his conservative critics on social media.

This particular album had its genesis when he promised to record an album of covers of artists from Georgia if the state flipped blue in the 2020 election, which it did.

6-Oct Brass Wind Instruments

Expert: Scott Spilane pulls out the flugelhorn from time to time. I was sad to discover that the only live recording of Andrew, Scott, & Laura has disappeared from the internet. But there is a version of the Elephant Six Holiday Party that Scott led in 2012.

It's not as good of a recording. But thankfully I have the other burned on a CD somewhere.

Tyler Childers - Purgatory

From red state Kentucky, he's been cancelled and deemed "woke" by the Repubs of country music for his politics, as well as putting out a music video depicting 2 male lovers.

I'm baaaaack mother fuckers! I think. Probably.

4-Expert: Play an album that was the first to use a new technology, technique, or strategy in its creation or distribution.

Nine Inch Nails "With Teeth" (2005 Nothing Records; 2019 reissue)
This album used a unique strategy in its initial marketing, with a sort of virtual reality game with various clues and puzzles to be solved, including thumb drives to find at NIN concerts. SCORE = 15.

7-Expert: Play a live show recorded on New Year's Eve.

The White Stripes "The Stijl XX" (2020 Third Man)
Had to dig for this one since the two easy picks were already gone (Ramones and Jimi). Found another option! The live album features a show recorded at Magic Stick Detroit on December 31st 2000. Boom! SCORE = 31.5

So many instances on this record, with Tomorrow Never Knows being the prime example.
If any Beatles fans haven't read Geoff Emerick's book; Here, There and Everywhere, I highly recommend it. (if you like nuts and bolts approaches)

Childish Gambino "Awaken, My Love!" (2017 Glassnote)
His 2018 single "This Is America" really pissed off conservatives on Twitter, including that fucking douchebag Alex Jones. Donald Glover is from Georgia, which was a red state in 2018. SCORE = 38

9-Oct On this day in 2002, John Lennon's killer, Mark David Chapman was denied parole for a second time on October 9th, the same day that Lennon would have turned 62. The state parole board issued a statement that said releasing Chapman after twenty-two years in prison would "deprecate the seriousness" of the crime and while Chapman had "acceptable" behavior in prison, that didn't guarantee he wouldn't pose a threat to society. At his first parole hearing two years earlier, Chapman said he did not deserve to go free. Expert: Play an album by someone who was murdered or had an attempt on their life.

Bryan Harvey was murdered along with his wife and daughters aged 4 and 9 on 1-1-2006 in a home invasion/robbery that was part of the 2006 Richmond Spree Murders.

It was horrific and brutal and I don't recommend reading anything about it if you haven't. I wish I could unread it.

On the morning of April 25, 1999, [Roger] Troutman was found shot and critically wounded outside his northwest Dayton recording studio around 7:00 a.m. According to doctors, the 47-year-old had been shot several times in the torso. Troutman died during surgery at the Good Samaritan Hospital and Health Center. Troutman's brother Larry was found dead in a car a few blocks away with a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The car matched the description of a vehicle leaving the scene, according to witnesses. It is believed that Larry had fatally shot Roger, then himself.

George Harrison / Nelson Wilbury was attacked in his home on 12/30/99 and stabbed 40 times. His statement on the attack included the line: "He wasn't a burglar, and he certainly wasn't auditioning for the Traveling Wilburys." So I'm going with them.
